This graduate level position is for a geologist and is based in Wilmington, Delaware. The position has both an office and field component and includes the following tasks, at a minimum:
• Perform specific and limited portions of routine assignments.
• Gather data and other information to be used in the preparation of scientific reports; compiles and organizes environmental data collected by others.
• Apply standard field practices and techniques in specific situations.
• Prepare basic data and scientific documents.
• Perform supervised field tasks, such as soil logging, monitoring well installation, sampling, testing, water level/groundwater gradient surveys, etc.
• Review analytical data for general indicators of quality for routine analyses based on well-defined guidelines.
The position is a field oriented one with field work primarily centered on active chemical manufacturing plants. Field work is carried out in a field team structure and consists of measuring and recording field observations, collecting surface and groundwater samples, collecting soil and sediment samples by hand or with the assistance of mechanical equipment like hollow-stem auger drill rigs or push-type equipment, and collecting biological samples, such as fish, for laboratory testing. In addition, this job requires the ability to document the field work in a field log book and transfer that documentation to computer software that outputs report-quality logs and tables. In addition to the Wilmington-based field work, the position may assist sampling teams at other locations within the region, primarily in the mid-Atlantic region, but possibly at sites in the Northeast and mid-America regions.
The position also has an office component that includes field note documentation, data analysis and report writing. The successful candidate will report directly to a senior project manager and receive day-to-day direction and mentoring from that senior project manager. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to those stated above.
