Power Plant Performance Engineering Intern

The Power Plant Performance Engineering Intern will assist the Power Plant Performance team with ongoing monitoring, evaluating, and optimizing plant performance (efficiency and total output) at The Geysers Power Plant.

The Power Plant Performance Engineering Intern will gain hands on experience in ongoing engineering projects including 1. Power plant performance testing. 2. Evaluation of test data. 3. Identify and recommend opportunities for cycle optimization and equipment upgrades. 4. Calculate steam production well performance parameters. The remainder of unloaded intern time will be utilized in assisting Tech Services personnel in other tasks including spreadsheet analysis.

Candidate should have completed coursework in their junior year in engineering science, including chemical, mechanical, or reservoir engineering coursework in Fluid Flow and Thermodynamics. Candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office Tools software (Word, Excel, Outlook), and ideally will be familiar with Excel programming in VBA as well as able to quickly learn the PIPE and Gate Cycle power plant performance modeling software packages. The candidate should also be willing to work as a team with good writing and communication skills. Intern must hold a valid driver’s license, and have the ability to drive mountainous, winding, narrow roads. Work environment includes an office setting as well as outdoors in an industrial/power plant setting.

Process Engineering Intern

The Geysers Process Engineering Intern will assist the Process Engineering Group with ongoing monitoring, evaluating and optimizing corrosion mitigation and steam scrubbing systems to achieve required steam purity at The Geysers.

The Process Engineering Intern will gain hands on experience in ongoing engineering projects including 1. Steam scrubbing efficiency testing and optimization of desuperheat systems. 2. Evaluation of steam line corrosion inhibitor performance and implementation at other locations. 3. Pipeline material balances to track transport and removal of steam impurities. 4. Assist with implementation of mercury removal systems. The remainder of unloaded intern time will be utilized in assisting Tech Services personnel in other tasks including correlations of chemical species in steam and data entry.

Candidate should have completed coursework in their junior year in engineering science, including chemical engineering coursework in Chemical Process Analysis, Transport Phenomena, Unit Operations and Unit Operations Lab, and chemistry coursework in General Chemistry with lab, and Quantitative Analysis with lab. Candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office Tools software (Word, Excel, Outlook), willing to work as a team with good writing and communication skills. Intern must hold a valid driver’s license, and have the ability to drive mountainous roads. Work environment includes office and laboratory settings as well as outdoors in an industrial/power plant setting.

Chemical Engineering Intern

The Geysers Chemical Engineering intern will assist the Chemistry and Waste department in a variety of chemical optimization and waste cost reduction efforts for The Geysers, which may include for example: Reducing the cost of managing sulfur product and waste shipments from Geysers; Evaluate Stretford sulfur filtration means to maximize salt extraction in filtrates; Research bacterial oxidation of thiosulfate salts in the Stretford process; Build a spreadsheet material balance around a geothermal power plant and develop an overall kinetic equation for the H2S abatement reaction.

The remainder of unloaded intern time will be utilized in assisting lab personnel in other analytical laboratory tasks including field sampling, chemical analyses and data entry.

Candidate should have completed coursework in their junior year in engineering science, including chemical engineering coursework in Chemical Process Analysis, Transport Phenomena, and chemistry coursework in General Chemistry with lab, and Quantitative Analysis with lab. Geophysicist Intern

The ideal candidate will have a strong geology and geophysics background (MS or MS candidate preferred; BS candidate considered) and a defined interest in geothermal energy. Responsibilities will include assistance in Calpine’s transition to 3D geological/geophysical model building and visualization; including data loading, quality control and organization. The position will also allow the opportunity for guided literature research and assistance with field activities. The selected candidate will benefit from exposure to the operations of a well-established geothermal energy provider and familiarization with 3D model building and visualization software. Previous experience with 3D software, a strong structural geology background and mapping skills (including field mapping) are preferred but not required.

6. Good academic standing or GPA of 3.0 or higher.
