Job Summary :
Using discretion and judgment, under the direction of the Senior Global Tax Supervisor, follows established procedures, guidelines, and processes. Performs tax reporting functions related to global tax matters affecting the MFS mutual funds, alternative and international products.
Maintains current knowledge of global tax issues impacting the MFS mutual funds, alternative and international products and their investments.
Prepares necessary international tax forms for submission to global custodians and filing with relevant foreign tax authorities.
Monitors local country tax law changes and stays current on matters that impact the Fund's tax compliance and tax filings in foreign jurisdictions (i.e. foreign tax withholding on dividends, interest, capital gains, and tax reclaims, etc.).
Perform foreign country tax research and tax planning, and analyze and document tax positions, policies and procedures.
Preparation of work papers and documentation in support of ASC 740 (FIN 48) for potential foreign capital gain tax liabilities for the fund's financial statements and corresponding footnote disclosures. This will require the analysis and interpretation of U.S. and foreign income tax laws, including tax treaties, when applicable.
Review and analyze U.S. foreign tax credits and limitations for MFS mutual funds.
Maintain appropriate filing calendars and tracking schedules.
Conduct testing and research on PFIC securities.
Assist in the preparation of FBAR filings.
Liaison with offshore tax advisers, obtain engagement letters and review billing invoices.
May assist in the preparation of fiscal year end and excise tax provisions and tax returns for the MFS mutual funds.
May provide assistance in the year-end reporting process including the source of distributions; e.g., ordinary income, capital gain, return of capital, etc.
May participate in various Fund Treasury and Tax Department projects and initiatives.
Monitor and maintain a list of IRC §1256 exchanges and currencies.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent education.
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a mutual fund complex, global custodian or public accounting firm with mutual fund and/or global tax experience preferred.
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Candidate must have a team oriented, collaborative approach to working with Fund Treasury colleagues, others across the organization and our service providers.
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) with working knowledge of tax return preparation and tax research software preferred.
