Job Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Production: Design and execution of electronic graphics resulting in a cohesive "look" for each project in keeping with KPBS's graphics standards. Using KPBS' computer graphics equipment, appropriate software, and digital editing equipment, and working with the production team or producer, the designer chooses colors, design elements, type styles and sizes and animation for each project; proof-reads all designs and text in said graphics May participate in pre-production planning to acquire information for the project before beginning the design process. Working with the Director of Production and producer, the designer will map out a realistic design timeline to ensure that designs are accomplished on schedule Serves as a Chyron Designer/Operator for KPBS TV's nightly news program, KPBS Evening Edition; creates the overall "look" for assigned projects by creating unique, up-to-date chyron designs and/or animation. This includes, but is not limited to, program titles, credits, lower third I-D's, and some text based graphics The Chyron Designer/Operator participates in pre-production planning, post-production analysis and critique sessions to understand graphics needs and analyze implementation plans for assigned projects Execute directions accurately and in a timely manner to crew as well as production staff. Work closely with producers, writers, production assistants, talent, as well as studio crew Reviews all aspects of created elements, including proofreading text and checking effects Maintain the confidence and skill to make last-minute changes and additions within the high-pressure environment of live TV productions Performs technical evaluations of graphics to ensure compliance with station and national technical standards Set design for productions when necessary Performs first-line corrective maintenance and routine preventative maintenance on all graphics and editing equipment and reports equipment failures Performs other duties as assigned Requires flexible hours including the need for overtime work, days, nights, weekends and holidays

Minimum Qualifications

College degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework Experience with SGI, LINUX, OS10, Windows XP, and Chyron computer systems; ability to facilitate file transfers and translation between formats; knowledge of software such as Liberty Paint, Discreet Flame, Discreet Combustion, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Alias Maya Unlimited, 3D Studio Max, spreadsheet and word processing software; and knowledge of 2D and 3D software, and Discreet Smoke, Final Cut Pro non-linear editing and digital editing systems essential

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of the graphic design and production principles and communication theory including a basic understanding of marketing and promotion concepts and knowledge of the use of color, tone, composition and balance Ability to design layout and prepare finished artwork to develop a visual production Solid working knowledge of applicable graphic design software packages and hardware systems and peripherals Ability to plan, prioritize and implement graphic art communications projects and coordinate a variety of tasks and deadlines on a daily basis Ability to consult and communicate effectively with staff and clients and to interpret and translate their needs and ideas into effective visual formats Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to get along with others and work under the direction of those not directly supervising them Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Well organized, detail oriented; possess good judgment and common sense Ability to combine creative with technical skills. Aware of current design and color trends and able to translate these into dynamic and tasteful electronic graphics using a variety of computer and electronic equipment and software Ability to direct and manage the work of vendors, employees and station partners or independent contractors that aren't under the designer's direct supervision Knowledge of all facets of publishing, advertising, and digital graphics; Knowledge of proofreader's marks Ability to work within a live broadcast environment Knowledge and understanding of public media and ability to visually communicate industry's purpose Ability to ensure that Division standards are met despite the seniority and authority of the requestor Must be able to utilize and be guided by the KPBS mission statement and strategic plan

Preferred Education/Certifications

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

Five years full-time professional graphic design/production experience in a broadcast television environment Knowledge of PBS, NPR and other national public media brands and their graphic representation and logo standards Able to work and accept creative feedback from others Ability to produce outstanding, state-of-the-art electronic graphics and designs Ability to streamline digital production pipeline Familiar with Storage Arrays, Video Interfaces, HD Production Software, Distributed High Definition Networking, UNIX/IRIX and High Definition Video Recorders
