Duties: This position provides grounds maintenance to the Capitol Complex. Throughout the summer season the position repairs and maintains underground irrigation systems, mows lawns, trims shrubbery, maintains landscape beds, and plants trees, shrubs and flowers. During the winter season this position plows sidewalks and parking lots and applies snow and ice melt. This position is also responsible for maintaining and repairing the ground maintenance equipment. For a complete job description email doahr@mt.gov

Competencies: This position requires:
  • Horticultural knowledge of pests, plants and tree diseases, their treatment, ornamental turf
  • Practical knowledge or experience in the operation of machinery, heavy equipment operation, hand operated tools (such as electric saw, chain saws, soil tillers);
  • Chemical application and safe use;
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems;
  • Knowledge in proper techniques for trimming shrubbery and trees;
  • Mechanical and technical skills in the operation of heavy equipment such as a backhoe and dump truck preferable.

Education/Experience: The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a high school diploma or its equivalent and two or more years of work experience in various aspects of landscape and machinery maintenance. Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
