The Thermal and Fluid Sciences Department of United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Group Leader, Acoustics. UTC is a $60 billion company that supplies products and services to the aerospace and building services industries. The Group Leader position includes a broad range of leadership activities important to the effective and efficient operation of UTRC. The primary responsibilities include:

Technical Leadership: must have demonstrated abilities to provide technical leadership in the areas of aeroacoustics (jet noise, combustion noise, turbomachinery or rotorcraft noise) and structural acoustics (acoustic wave propagation, structure/structure and fluid/structure interaction) from both a modeling and experimental standpoint.
Capability Development: must develop a strategic vision for the capabilities under his/her responsibility including staff, facilities, and outsourcing partnerships. This involves effectively engaging the UTRC program offices that support each of the UTC Business Units to develop an understanding of current directions and to participate in the formulation of future activities as they relate to the need for capability expansion.
Allocating Capability: must engage with Project Leaders in the tactical aspects of executing project plans to enable effective allocation of staff, laboratories and outsourcing decisions.
Staff Development: plays a central role in performance reviews, individual development planning, career planning, technical mentoring, and ensuring quality of execution.
Operations: responsible for hiring, meeting financial targets, capital planning, and environmental health and safety in offices and laboratories.
The successful candidate must be able to effectively demonstrate an ability to build capability through hiring and development of staff, externalization, and infrastructure improvements. The candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading worldwide institutions to fulfill organizational objectives. The candidate is expected to take a major role in interacting with UTRC Program Offices, UTC business units, and government funding agencies to enhance existing programs, create opportunities, and to assist in the acquisition of contract awards. The candidate must demonstrate superior communication skills and be able to provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations.

Masters Degree in Acoustics or related engineering field (e.g. Mechanical or Aerospace engineering) with at least 10 years experience in a research environment.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Acoustics or related engineering field (e.g. Mechanical or Aerospace engineering) with 7 - 10 years experience in a research environment Must have demonstrated leadership, communication, and staff development skills and the ability to work through people to achieve desired goals within schedule and budget constraints.
