Cherry Hospital, a State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is now accepting applications for a Health Care Technician I position to serve as a Work Program Assistant. This position will provide work task demonstration, instruction, and assistance to patients in a work setting. Also, position will provide guidance and support to patients in order to improve work site specific skills and general knowledge required to secure and maintain employment in the community. Work programs may be offered in a variety of locations, including but not limited to the treatment mall workshop, library, housekeeping, canteen, and dining room. This position may also assist with other special activities on evenings and weekends. Work hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and evenings/weekends/holidays as scheduled.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

*General knowledge of vocational programs and their applications in a psychiatric setting.

*Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

*Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

*Ability to interact courteously with staff and patients.

*Ability to train and instruct others.

*Ability to exercise sound judgment.

*Ability to demonstrate competencies in providing age and population specific programming for a mental health setting.

*Ability to withstand light to moderate physical activities.

*Ability to monitor and accurately document patient information.

*A willingness to learn and develop new skills and adjust to change.

*A compassion for working with mentally ill people and desire to make a difference.

**Management prefers: Experience working in a psychiatric setting.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High School or General Educational Development Diploma; some work experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

***Pre-employment drug testing and criminal background checks are required.

***As a condition for continued employment: must successfully pass all required parts of CPI’s Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course.
