The Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions is used for this series in conjunction with the Individual Occupational Requirements described below.

The following shows the amounts of education and/or experience required to qualify for positions covered by this standard.

GS-4: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience OR Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.

GS-5: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Defined specialized experience for GS-5 is providing clinical administrative support such as receiving patients and preparing health records; and medical assistance, such as obtaining and recording vital signs, setting patients for exams, screening and administering vaccines, to medical providers and nursing staff that provide patient care. Specialized experience for GS-4 is ability to perform above duties.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.

SELECTIVE FACTORS REQUIREMENT:
Knowledge of injection practices and techniques used in administering diagnostic and therapeutic agents, and the ability to Intramuscular injection. Knowledge and skills must be evidenced by certification as a Health Care Assistant (Medical Assistant) in Categories A, C, and E upon hire date or have ability to obtain certification within six months.
