The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) coordinates the day-to-day clerical activities of the nursing unit. The HUC directly/indirectly impact the patient outcomes and care provided to patients/families/significant others. Major areas of responsibility include managing interrelated communication systems, data input, processing of physician orders and a variety of clerical activities, which contribute to providing quality patient care. Serves as a liaison between the patient, nursing staff, physicians and ancillary departments. Facilitates communication and flow of information on the nursing unit and with the resource nurse, other hospital departments, physicians, patients and visitors. Utilizes data entry equipment to enter physicians’ orders on the Order Communication and Lab Information Systems, retrieve, update and maintain patient information. Maintains patient confidentiality and security of the computer system. Responsible for knowledge and implementation of the mission, visions, and values of Atrium Medical Center.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Satisfactory completion of a medical terminology course within the last five years (exceptions: RN, LPN, nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation. If medical terminology class was taken more than 5 years ago, must be able to document current use of medical terminology, OR two years experience as a HUC in an acute care setting.
Basic computer knowledge (data entry), keyboarding skills. Demonstrate working knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Typing 35 wpm preferred. CRT experience required. Ability to work a flexible schedule.
