UNCLASSIFIED POSITION
CURRENT VACANCY IS IN THE WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and one (1) year experience operating heavy construction equipment, such as trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, and trailers; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS :
Valid State of Georgia Commercial Driver’s (CDL) License.

JOB SUMMARY / DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS / ESSENTIAL DUTIES (REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE) / KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Incumbent in this class performs operational duties related to operating heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of roads, sewers, and right-of-ways throughout Fulton County. Responsibilities include loading heavy equipment, transporting materials, making minor equipment repairs or adjustments, and cleaning ice and snow from roadways.

This is the second level within a three-level equipment operator classification series. Heavy Equipment Operator is distinguished from Heavy Equipment Operator, Senior in that the former does not provide lead direction to assigned staff but operates heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of roads, sewers, and right-of-ways, whereas the latter provides lead direction to staff in addition to operating heavy equipment.

Operates a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, and trailers. Loads heavy equipment and transports material using lowboys or trailers. Makes minor repairs or adjustments to equipment in the field. Loads, hauls, and dumps trash. Operates steel wheel roller to compress and compact asphalt. Cuts grass and brush. Cleans ice and snow from roadways. Operates and maintains water pumps and wood chippers. Loads gravel, dirt, and sand with mechanical loader. Operates sand spreader during snow and ice conditions.


Heavy equipment used in general construction; Traffic laws and regulations; Occupational hazards and safety regulations related to heavy equipment operation; Vehicle systems and components, including ignition, brake, electrical, heating, cooling, and fuel systems; Vehicle mechanical systems, including engines, brakes, electrical, and hydraulic systems; Routine vehicle maintenance requirements and procedures; Safe vehicle operation procedures; Computers and diagnostic systems used in automotive service and repair.

Operating heavy equipment, such as trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, and trailers, and motor graders; Performing vehicle maintenance, including preventive maintenance; Operating a two-way radio; Interpreting computer fault codes and making corrective minor repairs; Observing traffic laws and regulations; Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other County personnel, officials, and the general public; Communication and interpersonal techniques as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
