Location: Sioux City Construction Office

This Position is Located in the Sioux City IDOT Construction Office and will perform construction survey on construction projects in the summer and assist with Winter Maintenance duties during winter operations.The Highway Technician Senior primary function is a Survey Party Chief. Their responsibilities involve performing construction survey duties necessary to build highway construction projects. The duties involve staking slope stakes, blue tops, paving hubs, roadway and storm sewer pipes, storm sewer intakes, RCB culverts, bridge staking, and other miscellaneous survey items. Horizontal and vertical control points may need to be recovered from preliminary, consultant, or as-built information. The position will be required to establish, maintain, and preserve project control points and benchmarks. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Electronic Distance Meter (EDM) equipment will be used to take measurements in a positional accuracy as prescribed in the Code of Iowa. Specific knowledge of engineering survey techniques and highway and bridge construction methods and inspection is required.

The Highway Technician Senior must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with the following additional requirements. This position also performs duties related to winter snow and ice removal. Assignment for winter snow and ice removal may be at the maintenance garage nearest the employees home. A valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brake and tanker endorsement must be obtained within 14 calendar days following appointment and maintained in order to continue employment.

A pre-employment drug screen and on-going participation in the random drug and alcohol testing program is required. A post-offer pre-employment physical examination will be required for new hires to assure the selected candidate possesses the physical capabilities to perform the essential functions.

Other duties may include performing as an inspector for some phase of construction on a project. These duties will require AGG 1 & 2, PCC 1, and HMA Sampler Material Certifications to be obtained and maintained.

Shift: Monday through Friday 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM with some weekends, holidays and overtime. Start and end times vary when construction survey is required for construction project.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. and four years of full-time highway maintenance and equipment operation work, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing .
