Assist in the setup and breakdown of special events. Coordinate with contracted personnel and outside vendors during special events. Staff museum and visitor center. Coordinate and assist with overall site operations daily as needed; administers simple first-aid as needed; provides staff support for special events; serves as public relations person for the department; responsible for proper opening and closing of buildings, including locks, alarms, etc.; see that buildings and grounds are clean and well maintained; perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

· Must be available Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays.

· Recreation Leader is a part-time position.

Distinguishing Characteristics

As a Recreation Leader this position requires an ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Recreation Leaders receive instruction and/or assistance during the day from the Senior Recreation Leaders. Recreation Leaders are able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions. Recreation Leaders are required to have prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities of a Recreation Leader include directing and supervising participants of the program; maintaining records pertinent to the program, implementing community oriented programing while ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the programs participants; working closely with the Senior Recreation Leaders to ensure the success of the program through preparation, execution and evaluation of the program; assisting other staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment; establishing and maintaining relationships with clients, participants, contracted vendors and other key individuals; and maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create happy environment for participants. Periodic responsibilities include attending monthly staff meetings as well as other meetings and trainings pertinent to program areas, and other duties assigned.


To be knowledgeable of the basic philosophy of parks and recreation principles, procedures of daily operations and basic first aid methods and techniques; safety precautions and procedures; Learn procedures/daily operations; work under limited supervision; maintain accurate records; plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them; communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing and must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.

Experience & Education:

Experience – Must have experience working with the public in a park or hospitality industry setting.
Education – Must have high school diploma preferably supplemented by college level courses in recreation, event planning, anthropology, or other related field.

Special Requirements/License or Certificate

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certification.
· Must have experience in utilizing computer software programs.
· Must have had experience working with the public.
· Must be available to work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays; required to attend mandatory meeting/training sessions; must provide own transportation; must have valid California State Driver’s License.
· Person hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Recreation Department.

Physical/Mental Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, withstand exposure to the outdoors and lift 50 lbs.

Minimum or Maximum Salary

· Part-time (hourly) position with pay rate of $10 per hour.
· Must be available Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays.
· This is a non-benefitted position.
· *Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year.
