Cherry Hospital, a State Psychiatric Hospital serving the eastern region of North Carolina, is now accepting applications for a HVAC Mechanic position. This position will independently perform the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems at the journeyman level. Position provides a safe and comfortable environment for the patients and staff member by maintaining and servicing all chillers, cooling towers, air conditioners and boilers for Cherry Hospital. Other responsibilities include the refrigeration equipment related to food services for the Main Kitchen; water coolers on campus; icemakers, inspection and repairs of all smoke and fire dampers. Work tasks requires strenuous lifting, crawling, working at heights up to sixty-five feet, confined spaces such as steam tunnels and manholes. Some work areas contain asbestos and require the use of respirators and other personal protective equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
*Knowledge of the design and operation of screw, centrifugal and reciprocal chillers.
*Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
*Knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control circuits.
*Working knowledge of refrigeration theory.
*Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.
*Ability to analyze building heating and air conditioning equipment and recommend modifications to achieve better operation or energy savings.
*Ability to perform strenuous lifting, crawling, and working at heights up to sixty-five feet, and confined spaces (steam tunnels and manholes).
*Ability to wear respirator and other protective equipment.
*** Management prefers : *Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical devices and controls. *Working knowledge of pneumatic controls. *Ability to respond to after normal working hour’s emergency call-back within 30 minutes from residence.
*** Required License:
***Valid North Carolina Drivers License.
***Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
