Head Cashier Position Description

Reports to: Sales Manager
The primary responsibility of the Head Cashier is to ensure an efficient and effective “front-end” of the store. This position works under moderate supervision and must work closely with customers, management and other Team Members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead – Delegates tasks and assists customers on transaction issues. Produces Daily Task Sheets for each Cashier. Ensures a smooth and continuous flow of customers through the cashier stations by directing traffic and working to relieve bottlenecks as quickly as possible. Ensures that cashiers rotate as a Greeter on a prescribed schedule.
Uses RPE Reports to ensure policies are being followed and to review for fraudulent transactions. Monitors “Dump” SKU’s. Maintains constant communication with cashiers, informing them of any needed information or procedure updates. Communicates on a regular basis with management on the overall productivity of the cashiering department and personnel issues that are brought to their attention.
Personnel – Works with Sales Manager to prepare Cashier work schedules and adjust as needed to meet the needs of the store. Communicates performance issues, including, but not limited to attendance, customer service issues, policy violations and till shortages to store management. Assists management with Cashier I and II performance evaluations. Answers Team Member questions regarding Company Policy or directs them to someone who can. Ensures that all team members greet our customers; Every Customer Every Time.
Cash Handling– Accurately uses POS screens and procedures to complete customer transactions, as well as receive accurate payment for merchandise. Maintains cashier accuracy standard, requiring that cash drawers are balanced within +/- $0.30.
Properly provides authorization, as needed, to complete transactions. Tracks and monitors amount of cash in each till, the need for drops, and the types of transactions done using Display Cash Drawer (DCD). Provides change as needed.
Refund Counter – Regularly checks at refund counter assisting transactions including, but not limited to, customer returns and refunds and check approval. Knows and communicates McLendon Return Policy.
Customer Service – Greets customers, acknowledges their presence and provides courteous, efficient and attentive service in a timely manner Every Customer Every Time. Addresses customer questions and complaints, exercising tact and good judgment, and involving Management as required to resolve customer issues.
Product Knowledge – Extensive knowledge of merchandise carried in the store and where it is located and how to find in P.O.S., in order to direct and assist customers.
Training – Trains and mentors, or assigns a Cashier II to train and mentor all new Cashiers on cash handling, cashiering procedures and policies, loss prevention and product knowledge.
Loss Prevention – Detects fraudulent situations, including but not limited to, counterfeit currency, refunds and shoplifters by using computer sales history and excellent customer service.
Housekeeping – Ensures that cashier stations, counter areas, and the entire “front-end” of the store is kept clean, neat, organized, stocked and faced.
Answers store phone.
Troubleshoots minor computer/Terminal problems.
Orders supplies from Warehouse to meet the needs of the Cashier Department.
Requests repair for machines not working properly, after checking with a manager.
Stocks and/or marks prices of neighboring departments, as necessary and as time allows.
Performs other duties as needed.
Submits tech support requests.
Worker Qualifications :
- Three (3) years cashier experience, with One (1) year at McLendon Hardware preferred.
- Must have completed the Basic Product Knowledge Course.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend and lift merchandise up to 35 lbs. for the majority of the workday.
- Must have basic computer knowledge to include general typing and ten key skills
- Must have the ability to read and write English and have proficient math skills.
- Must be dependable and flexible to meet business needs.
