Key strategic partner of the NBF Franchise, active member of the senior management team of the NBF franchise , providing strategic input based on external opportunities availability and assessment

Lead the Licensing and Business Development of the therapeutic area, recognizing the key needs of the Business and ensuring continuous improvement ·

Drive the identification of pre-clinical, clinical and commercial product in-licensing opportunities (NCE's and NBE's) that support strategic objectives of the therapeutic area

Manage teams of internal and external experts to evaluate pre-clinical, clinical or marketed product opportunities. Cross-functional due diligence teams include in-house and external scientific, clinical, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing, financial, legal, intellectual property experts.

Manage development of business case and financial model with other internal functions (with key link to Controlling, Portfolio Management and Legal)

Prepare and deliver presentations to Pharma Executive Committee integrating and summarizing scientific, clinical, financial and market information

Structure and negotiate terms of licensing agreements with potential alliance partners

Lead the negotiation of the full agreements in collaboration with the legal department


PEC members, Franchise leader, NBF TIPs head, Clinical Development, Research, Regulatory, Medical, Intellectual Property, Legal, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Market Research, New Product and Portfolio Planning, Finance, Global BD colleagues.

Major Tasks

Ensure EMD Serono’s brand image in the industry facilitates deal making –

Develop and maintain a strong and high quality network

Lead proactive efforts to identify external opportunities which fill the pre clinical, clinical and market needs set by NBF franchise

Coordination of cross-functional teams for due diligence and deal management

Ensure opportunities are evaluated with high standards to ensure consistency for internal/external projects, align with Portfolio Management

Oversee the preparation of agreements working closely with Legal, IP, Controlling

Negotiate deal structure and financial terms of agreements including the possibility of equity participation

Seek strong support and buy-in of key internal stakeholders during deal making and preparation of information for decision

Guide team members through deal process and negotiations for small /mid-size deals

Work with / support Head of Global L&BD on larger / high strategic deals

Coach and develop skills of team members and set HR goals and priorities including

Talent management and succession planning



Advanced degree in life sciences and / or advanced business degree

Fluency in English (both verbal and written) is essential, knowledge of German or French is an asset.

Outstanding written and verbal presentation skills are required. Ability to articulate and formulate decisions and actions in clear business language


10+ years industry experience with between 5 + years in the Business Development function

Demonstrated team leadership experience.

Ability to multitask, strong analytical capabilities, strong interpersonal skills,

Proven track record of strong negotiation,

Outstanding time management, and demonstrated delivery of continued high quality work in a changing environment

Demonstrated history of successfully leading project teams or strategic corporate initiatives

Strong background in biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical drug development.


Strong skills at presenting findings and recommendations to senior management.

Mature personality with the standing to be the voice of the partner within EMD Serono and with the standing to be the voice of EMD Serono in discussions with the partner.

Established network of contacts in key academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Demonstrated experience working in a fast paced setting; enthusiastic about the potential strategic options; well-grounded in pragmatic approaches to structuring options available.

Experience working in the context of a large, complex, global organization where working across boundaries and leading through influence are keys to success

Global perspective. Multi-cultural background preferred.
