Safety Specialist

Summary
Under the direction of the EHS Manager, with a dotted line reporting to the local Plant Manager, the Safety Officer will be responsible for the day to day EHS requirements for their facility. They will be charged with ensuring that the facility meets all applicable federal, state and local requirements and maintains a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.

Job Duties:
Safety issues policy violations and OSHA requirements
Environmental compliance to local, state and federal requirements
Workplace conditions that affect employees health and well being
Performs monitoring using basic Industrial Hygiene meters and detection devices to measure and report on possible unsafe conditions such as noise, dust and hazardous chemical exposures. Report findings to EHS
Manager for analysis and recommendations for remediation
Monitors and/or performs basic removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards at the facility, coordinates removal of hazards by outside contractors that are beyond the scope of basic remediation practices
Deliver safety, health and environmental based training to facility employees and contractors using a variety of media such as: hand-outs, Power Point presentations, DVD and video and other corporate supplied materials
Perform safety related new hire orientations to new employees
Maintain records of completed training sessions, monitor for periodic retraining and perform as necessary
Maintain emergency response and evacuation processes in a ready state. Conduct training and drills as necessary to ensure employees know what to do in the event of an emergency response event
Perform daily inspections of the facility ensuring that all exits are clear, the aisles are clear of obstructions and that all employees are wearing the proper personal protective equipment for the job they are performing
Perform monthly inspections of the facility as outlined on the monthly inspection forms. Note any deficiencies and report findings to facility management and EHS Manager for corrective action and a timeline for remediation
Develop and perform monthly check lists for periodic maintenance of equipment and report deficiencies to EHS Manager and plant management. Facilitate maintenance repairs using either internal or external resources as required to safely and successfully correct deficiencies in a timely manner
Facilitate safety committee meetings, record minutes and findings to facility management and EHS Manager and coordinate with facility management a timetable for remediation of deficiencies
Facilitate safety incentive programs as detailed by EHS Manager and corporate Human Resource directive
Conduct investigations of all facility accidents, incidents and near miss incidents, coordinate completion of victim, supervisor and witness forms and submission to EHS Manager in a timely manner, write and submit a narrative of the event to EHS Manager and coordinate any corrective actions deemed necessary in the timeline given
Issue and track oral and written warnings to employees for non-compliance of EHS mandates. Recommend to facility management and EHS Manager egregious infractions for further corrective action
Maintain library of Safety Data Sheets (formerly Material Safety Data Sheets)
Serve as facility point of contact for unannounced government safety health and environmental inspections, various contractors and vendors for safety health and environmental related inspections and periodic maintenance issues

Job Requirements:
HS graduate, Associates degree or higher preferred. 1 – 5 years safety, health and/or environmental experience in a manufacturing environment
Basic knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and HAZMAT requirements as well as, Workers
Compensation laws and other safety and health related government agency laws and regulations
Computer literate in MS Office suite and good presentation skills
