The Health and Safety Programs Office in the School of Medicine at Stanford University has an immediate opening for a Health and Safety Specialist.

The Health and Safety Specialist provides programmatic safety direction and support to the School of Medicine, its departments, faculty, staff and students, to develop an infrastructure that fosters long-term workplace safety, compliance, and risk reduction throughout the School.

This Health and Safety Specialist will apply their advanced knowledge of the principles, concepts and methods of environmental health and safety, in a collaborative research setting (biomedical, engineering, new technology). The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: compliance and occupational work practices to support and maintain the School’s Health and Safety program, providing professional and technical services that focus on regulatory compliance and institutional policy issues, response to daily school requests from academic and administrative departments, integration of knowledge of regulatory compliance into research and administrative practices of the school’s faculty, staff and students, serving on the School and Hospital Environmental Rounds teams, providing on-site training on lab safety to individual departments, principal investigators and administrative personnel, interacting with school and university facility personnel, reviewing project plans, furnishing additional support in emergency preparedness, and collaborating in other programmatic areas.

Qualifications for this position are as follows:
Required:
A bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology, Fundamental Academic Science and/or Environmental Sciences and at least five years of previous related work experience. A basis understanding of chemistry and biology, specifically in areas relating to medical research and biotechnology; advanced knowledge of principles and practices of environmental health and safety. Advanced knowledge of federal, state and local health and safety regulations; ability to apply them in an academic setting. Extensive knowledge of training and presentation processes, including advanced audio/visual/computer presentation techniques and modern hardware.

Knowledge of research and administrative facility design parameters, ability to review architectural and construction plans as well as specifications related to these areas. Knowledge of emergency preparedness and recovery procedure fundamentals. Knowledge of, and experience with Apple computer systems, applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases) and creation and editing of web pages. Ability to write clearly and communicate effectively. Highly organized and detail oriented with the ability to exercise tact and superior diplomatic skills. Be able to interact and work effectively with a myriad of personality types and be comfortable around peers, senior scientists, students and senior management.

Desired:
Master’s degree and seven years or experience. Professional certifications in Hazardous Materials, General Safety and Health and Safety. Knowledge of laboratory practices in medical research and biotechnology, particularly with respect to working with hazardous materials. Knowledge of innovative, interactive computer technology (on-line training, Flash, video streaming.
