About the Healthy Corners Program

After one full year of operations, Healthy Corners has established itself as a unique, and uniquely successful, response to the interrelated problems of rising hunger, limited healthy food access, and broken food systems. Our model employs what DC’s low-income neighborhoods already have – corner stores, and lots of them – to bring affordable, healthy food to struggling households.

Today, 29 corner stores in DC’s ‘food deserts’ are active participants in Healthy Corners. We provide each partner retailer with hands-on training and sales assistance, helping them to safely stock and sell the fresh produce and healthy snacks that we deliver to them at discounted rates. We offer free infrastructure support, including refrigerators and shelving units that attract customers while preserving our products. And we conduct community outreach events that encourage consumers to sample and purchase our food items while learning about good nutrition. Product sales have steadily grown each month, and we are providing an essential service for food stamp recipients and other low-income consumers who would otherwise be unable to access quality food items in their own neighborhoods. While several other nonprofits across America are working to promote the sale of healthier food in corner stores through training and marketing assistance, DCCK is the only organization to take on the central issue of food distribution.

About the Healthy Corners Internship

This summer, we seek a Master’s level intern to support the following initiatives relating to Healthy Corners’ strategic improvement:

--Capturing and analyzing outcomes data relating to corner store sales and the health of target populations;

--Identifying and implementing new marketing and community outreach strategies;

--Conducting a market analysis and providing an evidence-based recommendation for the social enterprise model of Healthy Corners, weighing the risks and benefits of solely serving stores in low-income communities or selling our products to higher-end retailers to off-set the costs of doing business in DC’s ‘food deserts;

The Healthy Corners Intern will work both in the field, interacting with store owners and customers, and at our Nutrition Lab facility. A successful intern will be independently motivated, confident, street-smart, and have full access to a vehicle of their own. A $500 stipend for transportation and incidental expenses is available.

Requirements
Must be able to assist in the following areas of Healthy Corners:
  • Data collection
  • Store information
  • Training of new and existing stores
  • Areas of improvement to the program
  • Community engagement/outreach
  • Must be able to work with other partners, such as DC Government and other non-profits.
  • Comfortable given a task to complete on their own and can keep up with a fast pace environment.
  • Must be able to work in excel
Seeking a candidate who is in pursuit of BA/BS in nutrition, public health, public policy, education or other related field.
