DESCRIPTION

Reports: As designated

Equipment/Materials Utilized: Street maintenance materials and equipment, such as roller, asphalt paver, distributor truck, street sweeper, backhoes, dump trucks, rubber tire loader, track loader and motor grader; landscaping equipment; hand and power tools.

Shift Work: No, on call.

Primary Location: Outdoor.

Job Hazards: Traffic, chemicals, heavy & light construction equipment, power tools, noise, animals at large, insects and weather.

Physical Efforts: Full range of physical efforts including lifting, carrying, and positioning of objects up to 75 pounds in weight; pulls, pushes, or drags up to 75 pounds; visual and hearing acuity; prolonged work in tiring or uncomfortable positions; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, stretching and climbing on large vehicles and equipment; good eye, hand, foot coordination in the manipulation of gears, pedals and steering wheels of light and heavy equipment.

DUTIES

Operates motor grader in constructing streets, starting with the removal of material for sub-grade, to mixing and grading of base, to finish grading in preparation for asphalt surface. Involves understanding and utilizing stakes, hubs and blue tops.

Operates asphalt paver to lay down HMAC to specified thickness and tolerances.

Operates wheel and track loader for such purposes as stripping dirt and road material, cutting of street and alley surfaces to specified grade and loading of dump trucks.

Operate dump truck, water truck, backhoe, compactors and other equipment associated with the maintenance of streets, alleys and drainage.

Operates track excavator to cut drainage ditch walls to grade.

Uses hand tools and instruments associated with construction work such as shovels, rakes, pick, tape measure, etc.

Other miscellaneous duties, perform normal preventative maintenance such as cleaning, greasing and oiling equipment and trucks, flag traffic, set up and remove cones and barricades, sanding streets for oil spills and wintry weather, cutting and removing trees.

The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

Attendance is an essential job function.

Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge and experience in the operation of heavy motorized maintenance/construction equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions; knowledge in the safe and efficient operation of equipment and vehicles; working knowledge of the methods, material and equipment used in street maintenance work; knowledge of routine vehicle and equipment maintenance; ability to relate well with the public and co workers.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Minimum Experience (Years): 1 year.

Type of Experience: Light and heavy/construction equipment operation and maintenance.

Specialized Requirements: Valid Texas driver's license with insurable record. CDL Class A or B certification required withing six months of employment.
