Position Overview
Under general supervision, the technician investigates and resolves end-user computer problems related to the Nexen Petroleum U.S.A. suite of software and hardware.

Compressed Work Schedule
This position is eligible for Nexen's Compressed Work Schedule program (CWS). This program provides flexibility in work hours to assist employees in balancing their work and personal lives. CWS participants work eight hours and 15 minutes per day and earn two Fridays off per month, for a total of 24 days off annually.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Answers, evaluates, and prioritizes incoming telephone, voice mail, e-mail, and in-person requests for assistance from users experiencing problems with hardware, software, networking, and other computer-related technologies;

Interviews user to collect information about problem and leads user through diagnostic procedures to determine source of error;

Determines whether problem is caused by hardware such as printer, cables, or telephone;

Acts as first and second level support for Help Desk by handling problem recognition, research, isolation, resolution and follow-up for both routine and complex user problems;

Logs and tracks calls using problem management database, and maintains history records and related problem documentation;

Assists Help Desk Supervisor with ongoing maintenance of computer room and A/V room environment (i.e. UPS, A/C generator, projectors). Also assists end users with setting up A/V rooms for conferences;

Prepares standard statistical reports, such as help desk incident reports;

Calls hardware vendors to request service regarding defective products;

Installs new software packages as needed;

Assists new hires with PC setup, login and basic introduction to computing environment;

Keeps current with knowledge and understanding of all Nexen supported hardware and software.

Education/Experience

Requires an Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school (or equivalent experience);

Five (5) years related work experience, with two years directly relating to help desk;

Oil and gas industry experience would be a plus;

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization;

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs;

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations;
