Assists with maintaining and providing safe and reliable gas transportation. Supports the crew by performing manual excavation, operating pneumatic tools, and other equipment for the maintenance of gas facilities. May work independently but generally works under the direction of a lead person. Operates company vehicles. Work involves rotating shifts in a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Following training, job location may be as assigned at any station within the Washington Gas service area (VA, MD, and/or DC).

Assists with emergency/priority situations
' Assists the lead person and other senior employees to maintain equipment in working order.
' Retrieves the necessary tools and equipment to perform repairs.
Job assignment responsibilities
' Responsible for adhering to WG Engineering & Operating standards and all other company policies and procedures.
' Responsible for adhering to Federal, State and Local Codes.
' Completes or verifies all documents associated with job.
' Assures that work is completed within given timeframe.
' Responsible for personal and job site safety situations.
' Installs and removes protective barriers (i.e. shoring material).
' Follows and adheres to company standards as it pertains to proper excavation practices.
' Loads and unload required material.
Operates power tools as needed
' Breakers, rammer, clay spade, drills, cutters, saws, etc.
Excavates company facilities
' Hand excavating tools.
' Awareness and follow proper procedures when excavating near or around other utilities.
Assists in the performance of regular and scheduled maintenance on company facilities
' Regular and scheduled maintenance is defined as, but not limited to:
- Assists in leak investigations, grading, detection and surveys;
- Assists in valve inspections, drip monitoring; and
- Assists in tightening, adjusting and repairing basic/minor leakage
Interprets company records
' Reads and interprets company records, including quad maps, map books, etc.
Communicates effectively with customers and co-workers, both electronically and in person.
' Professionally represents Washington Gas while communicating with customers to maintain good relations and the Company's prestige.
Stocks and equips company vehicle
' Orders materials needed for daily activities
' Secures and stores materials safely
' Disposes of excess debris properly
' Keeps vehicle clean and orderly
' Follows guidelines for returning damaged material
Maintains tools, equipment/instruments
' Assists with inspecting, testing and documenting findings for; CGI, fire extinguisher, PPE, etc.

Job Description - Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) Basic computer skills. Demonstrated good verbal communication skills. Must pass Work Keys Test and pre-qualifying written and practical exam(s) as applicable. Graduation from a hands-on vocational or technical training program (during or post-high school), in areas such as HVAC, plumbing, automotive (body and/or mechanical). In place of vocational/technical training, at least 6 months of experience in auto repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, landscaping or other construction field that includes the use of hand tools. Must successfully complete all assigned training modules, qualifying exams and field clearances after hire, including Flagging and Plastic Pipe Joint (PPJ mechanical) certifications.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver's License required.
