Employee hired must have a valid Class B driver’s permit with air brakes the first day of work. The employee will then have 30 calendar days to take the behind-the-wheel exam and get the class B driver’s license with air brakes. The district will make the equipment available for the employee to practice driving during these 30 days.

Knowledge of practices, principles, standards and guidelines as related to signage and maintenance. must be flexible in daily schedule; able to work under stress; remain calm and maintain focus under demanding and often conflicting work schedule with rapid shifts in priority; work after hours, on weekends, and holidays during road and weather emergencies is required; presence during deadlines and high stress periods of work is mandatory; regular attendance is essential to efficiently process the volume of work in this position; regular attendance is critical in this position because the expertise the employee is providing will not be available from any other source.

Summary of Work:
Installation, repair and replacement of signs, guardrails and guide posts: Interpret the Manual on Uniform Control Devices specification in order to properly install and maintain traffic control devices. Install, repair and replace traffic control devices such as signs, delineators, guardrails, traffic signals, etc. Assist in the repair of lighting systems on highways, rest areas and scalehouse. Using the retroreflectometer to decide which signs should be replaced. Assist in maintaining district inventory of signs, posts, guardrail hardware and other sign shop hardware (includes inputting sign inventory on computer system). Approximately 50 percent of the time is spent on this duty.
Installation of striping and pavement markings: Operate pickup mounted striping machine. Apply and maintain pavement centerline and edgeline striping and payment markings for railroads, stop bars, etc. Assist with application of plastic pavement markings. Assist with inventory of pain, glass beads, templates, etc. Approximately 30 percent of the time is spent on this duty.
Servicing of equipment and upkeep of facilities: Complete vehicle use reports. Change oil and lubricate equipment according to schedules. Clean, make minor repairs and keep equipment in good operating order. Approximately 10 percent of the time is spent on this duty.
Assist with snow removal: Shovel sidewalks and driveways. Operate front end loader, snowblower and plow trucks during emergency conditions. Approximately 5 percent of the time is spent on this duty.
Supervising other employees: Assume responsibilities of highway control traffic supervisor if absent. Assist temporaries in completion of timesheets. Supervise temporaries to assist in duties listed above. Supervise equipment operators when assigned to complete larger projects such as guardrail replacement. Approximately 5 percent of the time is spent on this duty.
