DESCRIPTION

Respite Services provide highly trained home companions for people caring for a family member, with a developmental disability. Companions work in people's homes and in varied community settings serving families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Our compassionate Home Companions give respite to parents and other primary care givers of people with developmental disabilities of all ages. Abilities United has been providing quality respite services to clients throughout the Bay Area for over 25 years. Our companions are able to assist with appropriate medical referrals but are not trained to meet many medical needs.

DUTIES

Respite care includes feeding, toileting, bathing, dressing, companionship on outings (with and without the family), and assisting with independent living skills, as well as other tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide effective respite to families consistent with Abilities United and Home Companion policy & proceduresProvide effective respite to families consistent with Abilities United and Home Companion policy & procedures.
  • Responsible to self-schedule stays with families
  • Report to location on time and ensure coverage entire duration of assignment
  • Transport consumers in personal vehicle as arranged.
  • Administer medications as directed in accordance with policy & procedures manual.
DUTIES:
  • Participate in trainings as directed by Respite Program Manager.
  • Complete & mail in all necessary paperwork.
  • Report all scheduled respite stays to Respite Program Manager prior to actual stays.
  • Attend scheduled annual staff meetings.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift & transfer individuals who weigh up to 150 lbs. - occasionally.
Ability to push, in a wheelchair, individuals who weigh up to 150 lbs. - occasionally.

  • Ability to actively participate in frequent recreational activities.
QUALIFICATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be minimum of 18 years old

Education: HS diploma or equivalent required;

Experience: 6 months working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Substitution: College course work in related field may replace experience

Certification: Standard 1st Aid with Adult, Child and Infant CPR (may be obtained post-hire)

Other: Successful completion of all trainee requirements before promotion to Home Companion I, communicate clearly & effectively, verbally & in writing, project a professional & positive image at all times.

PRE EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Clearance with the Department of Justice by completing a background check consisting of having fingerprints processed by appropriate law enforcement agencies (paid for by Abilities United)

Provide clean DMV printout during interview process. Proof of valid driver's license & copy of auto insurance liability coverage.

POST EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Physical, 2-step Tb test and physical examination. Maintain all job related certification requirements.
