The Horticulture Technician supervises student workers in the year-round horticultural enterprises at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex. Will be under the direction of the horticulture supervisor and plant science faculty. Must direct activities of student workers and farm staff performing horticulture assignments. Responsibilities will include various greenhouse crops, nursery plants, fruits, vegetables, flowerbeds, and turf grass plots at both the farm and main campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises workstudy students and farm staff performing various horticultural assignments at the farm, Browning Orchard, and main campus.
Operates equipment and tools associated with all horticultural operations including, the orchard, vineyard, landscape maintenance, vegetable fields, and greenhouse units.
Oversees the production of the various horticultural units at the farm such as, orchard, vineyard, greenhouses, vegetable and turf plots, etc.
Maintains production records on the various horticulture units at the farm.
In conjunction with the Horticulture Supervisor, develops a marketing plan for all horticulture products, and when approved, carries out the marketing plans.
Obtains and maintains certification in the use of restricted pesticides.
Follows pesticide application schedules and maintains required records.
Maintains greenhouse facilities in excellent condition.
Monitors the operation of greenhouse environmental controls.
Maintains orchard, vineyard, lath house, turf plots, garden and lawn areas, associated with the horticulture unit, in a manner presentable to the public at all times.
Obtains information from faculty on what supplies are needed and then after approval of supervisor, orders the horticultural supplies.
Reports major maintenance or repairs needed to the horticulture facilities or equipment at the farm to the supervisor.
Performs general maintenance and repair.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Hosts farm tours.
Assists in other production areas of farm as needed.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
This position reports to the Horticulture Supervisor and plant science faculty. In the absence of the Horticulture Supervisor the Horticulture Technician will report to the Farm Manager. The Horticulture Technician directs activities of student workers and interacts with other farm employees, faculty and students.
Must have some college education related to the horticulture area. Valid driver’s license required. Must have practical experience with a variety of horticultural crops. The ability to operate farm machinery and equipment is required. This is a live-in position. Residence in assigned facility required.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
An associate or bachelor degree in horticulture or plant science is desirable.
Strenuous physical labor and heavy lifting are required.
Forty hour work week, rotating holidays. Both indoor and outdoor work is required in all types of weather conditions. Strenuous physical labor and heavy lifting are required. Maybe required to work some weekends.
