Position serves as a member of the Veterans Administration Boston Healthcare System and is located in West Roxbury, MA.

Providing technical industrial engineering support for the implementation and maintenance of systems redesign processes relating to care/services provided;

Developing implementation and evaluation strategies that support achievement of the organization’s strategic plan;

Training and coaching system redesign teams;

Preparing aggregate reports and analysis of performance for the healthcare system;

Working closely with clinical and administrative services to assure information systems are accurate/consistent;

Reviewing other healthcare institutions to identify best business practices;

Assisting Director on special complex assignments.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

A professional engineering degree in a school of engineering whose curriculum is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or whose curriculum included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in FIVE of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics. (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics;(e) electrical fields; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

You must submit copies of your transcripts so that this educational requirement can be verified.


A combination of education and experience, i.e., college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering may be substituted for the basic educational requirement.

The adequacy of such background MUST be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • Professional registration
  • current registration as a professional engineer. For those who achieved such registration by means other than a written test, eligibility only extends to positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.
  • Specified academic course
  • successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirement. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum as described above.
  • Related curriculum
  • successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelors degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate profession field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.


One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in Federal service.

Examples of specialized experience include:
knowledge of industrial engineering principles and concepts; monitoring large, complex operational improvement projects; knowledge of multiple applications such as SQL, Minitab, MS Access, MS Excel; analyzing systems using engineering principles; applying engineering tools to improve health care systems/processes; leading multidisciplinary teams in improving systems/processes that have a significant impact on quality of patient care; training staff on basic engineering principles including simulation modeling, human factors, rapid process analyses, and value stream mapping at a Black Belt or comparable level; and preparing project papers and staff reports.

Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-09 grade level.

A combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position is fully qualifying at the GS-09 grade level. To qualify by a combination, the total qualifying experience will be calculated as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; and the education will be calculated as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. These two percentages will be added, and the total percentages must equal at least 100 percent.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily sedentary. Some walking, bending and carrying of light office items is required. Travel between the different sites is required.
