INSTRUCTOR OF CHINESE
Western Kentucky University (WKU) invites applications for an Instructor Chinese Language position in the Chinese Flagship Language program. WKU’s Flagship is part of a larger national Flagship initiative developing an innovated national model of advanced language learning. The successful candidate will report to the Academic Director, Chinese Flagship Program. The start date is August 15, 2013.
WKU is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky and enrolls more than 21,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The area (with an urbanized population of 100,000+) is noted for its high quality of life, increasing cultural diversity, and modest cost of living. Bowling Green is located 65 miles north of Nashville, TN and 120 miles south of Louisville, KY. WKU is home to a Confucius Institute and has a popular and growing interdisciplinary Asian Studies program.
Position: Instructor of Chinese in the WKU Chinese Flagship Program. This is a one-year appointment, renewable pending funding.
Required Qualifications: Minimum of a Master degree in Chinese Language and Literature, Second Language Acquisition with an emphasis on Chinese pedagogy, or Chinese Linguistics; Native or near-native fluency in both Mandarin and English; Experience teaching Chinese at the university level and in curriculum development; Commitment to a communicative teaching approach.
Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching intensive first –year through advanced Chinese language courses (equivalent to a 5/5 load), active programmatic involvement, and close collaboration with the Chinese Flagship Program team, with faculty in the Department of Modern Languages, and with faculty in related disciplines. The individual hired will promote the study of Chinese and help build a rigorous and cohesive proficiency-based Chinese language and culture program.
The Chinese Flagship at WKU is one of nine Chinese programs in the U.S. that are federally funded by The Language Flagship Program (
) The program is designed to bring talented undergraduate students to the superior level of proficiency on the ACTFL scale by the time they graduate from college. The curriculum involves accelerated Chinese language courses, multiple experiences in China, and one or more internships.
