This position is located within Information Services in the Office of the Vice President for Research. The duties of this position require a substantial amount of interaction with Departmental Administrators, technical ancillaries, and varying levels of knowledge and expertise across the campus. Incumbent will be constantly researching new computer hardware and software options, keeping on the forefront of technology. This person will be expected to achieve results despite obstacles.
Responsible for the installation of personal computers, printers, adapter cards, cables, and other necessary hardware. Installs software and makes modifications when necessary. Identifies and corrects hardware and software problems as they occur. Makes arrangements to have equipment repaired or replaced when necessary. Provides technical assistance in customizing microcomputer operations to fit user’s needs.
Additional duties requires off site technical support of the Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology, the Innovation Hub, the Office of Technology Licensing, the Division of Sponsored Programs, Animal Care Services, as well as other departments that come under the Office of Research. Provides technical support for these areas; consults with users in these areas concerning hardware/software needs and recommendations.
Researches new computer hardware options and software applications and recommends improvements. Serves as liaison with vendors. Due to the increasing use of mini-computers and hand-held PDA’s, incumbent will research and advise faculty and staff in new technology that serves to advance the University’s research endeavor via the Office of Research and it’s departments.
Responsible for maintaining hardware and software inventories, manuals and documentation regarding workstation support. Will work closely with property to assure that all equipment under the purview of Information Services is accounted for, and kept up to date.
Assists in all phases of Office of Research computer operations and responsibilities when other computer personnel are absent or when the workload requires it.
A high school diploma and four years of any combination of relevant experience, education and/or certification. The level of expertise and skill required to qualify for a position in this classification is generally attained through combinations of education and experience in the field. While such employees commonly have a bachelor’s or higher degree, no particular academic degree is required.
Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience, or a High School Degree and six years of appropriate experience is required.
Documented working knowledge of networking technologies and preferred industry practices including, but not limited to: IP, TCP & FTP is required.
Working knowledge of PC and MAC software and hardware is required.
Ability to configure, install and remove, LAN adapter cards, emulation cards, memory, and disk drives.
Working knowledge of Blackberry and iPhone devices and applications.
Knowledge of the basic terminology, concepts and techniques of data processing and computer programming.
Ability to think logically, analyze and solve problems, interprets technical information relating to computer hardware and software, and knows when to seek outside advice when solving problems.
Ability to effectively communicate technical information verbally and in writing, establish and maintain effective work relationships with others.
Knowledge of and demonstrable experience in delivering consistent and stable production-level services is required.
Knowledge of and experience in Windows 7 and 8 is a major plus.
Ability to organize and manage complex activities and to complete assignments in a timely fashion with attention to detail and accuracy with exceptional interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Keeps situations in proper perspective and effectively executes strategic priorities.
Knowledge of and demonstrable experience in conducting research, evaluating and testing, and implementing products and services into an integrated, multi-user LAN environment with minimal disruption in services and resources is preferred.
