Job Description Objectives:
Provide Auto Deploy support for securely booting Stateless hosts over an insecure network using the TPM chip technology support in ESXi. This will allow Auto Deploy to be able to authenticate hosts and send sensitive image data to these hosts in a secure fashion.
Network boot is inherently insecure. It is not possible to verify the identity of the host that does not have a running operating system. However, most new systems these days have an integrated TPM chip which has an embedded signed certificate which can be used to identify the system. As part of this project, the intern will integrate TPM support in to Auto Deploy in the following 3 stages:
- Auto Deploy first needs to use the TPM on the host to securely identify the specific host.
- Auto deploy then needs to separate out the sensitive data from the Host Profile, and only distribute that to authenticated hosts.
- Finally, Auto Deploy should serve what data it can (the non-sensitive kind) over an unencrypted connection for performance reasons.
