The Industrial Engineer is responsible for identifying and recommending process improvement opportunities in the areas of labor management, operational processes, slotting, storage & pick area design, packing & shipping area design, work area design, and conveyor system design to continuously improve distribution center operating efficiencies & effectiveness. Provides engineering and analysis support for distribution center capital projects, storage/design projects, the distribution center labor planning & labor standards processes, and the distribution center slotting processes.
1. Labor Management
Assist in the development and implementation of processes and methods for labor forecasting, staffing, modeling performance reporting and tracking, and other ad-hoc reporting as required to support distribution center labor management.
Assist in the development and implementation of engineered labor standards for multi-variable distribution operations. Develop proper methods and procedures to be used for each distribution operation. Develop, evaluate, make changes to distribution center process documentation and work instructions. Develop and implement a staffing model tool.
Train managers to perform validation and counseling observations including pace and skill rating, and employee adherence to Best Demonstrated Practices.
Train managers/supervisors on the use and maintenance of the labor reporting system/engineered standards.
2. Operational Processes
Perform ongoing analysis of distribution processes, distribution center storage design, distribution center efficiency tools, and results to identify opportunities to improve distribution center efficiencies/productivity and reduce distribution processing cost per unit.
Recommend methods for improving distribution center associate efficiency and reducing waste of materials/utilities, reorganizing workflow, relocating work stations, and purchasing of equipment/tools.
Analyze current work methods and procedures within operations and by job function to identify opportunities for improvement.
Qualify and quantify key opportunities for improvement in operations and return-on-investment; build a business case to implement and present to leadership as appropriate.
Assist in the development of an implementation plan for each approved initiative including team member identification, roles and responsibility definition, and scheduling milestones and timelines. Establish mechanisms for monitoring implementation results and updating staffing model. Drive achievement of expected results for each program to assure optimal success while providing frequent updates to peers and upper management.
Assist in the development & management of distribution center slotting strategy & processes to improve distribution center productivity, reduce distribution center throughput cycle time, improve distribution center safety performance, improve order accuracy, and reduce product damage.
4. Distribution Center Storage/Work Area/Conveyor Design
Analyze/evaluate existing distribution center storage design and material handling systems and make recommendations to improve capacity, efficiency, and safety.
Participate in distribution center layout and design related to storage media, material handling systems design, packaging areas, associate common areas, and overall space utilization inside the distribution center.
Assist with the analysis of space utilization and efficient use of storage media for inventory.
Make recommendations to improve layouts and space utilization and lead execution of changes.
Participate in the evaluation of external vendor partners and suppliers of equipment, materials or services
Participate in the negotiation with vendor partners or suppliers on cost, timelines and terms/conditions to best meet needs of the business.
Assist in the analysis and financial feasibility studies related to capital equipment and investments for the distribution center operation.
Participate in the capital projects budgeting process.
Identify scope and requirements for equipment or tools, quantity, solicit estimates, review proposals and make recommendations to management on best options for assets.
Write and review requests for proposals if needed.
5. Project Management
Lead/participate in distribution center & supply chain projects
May also be responsible for effectively managing employees in assigned functions by creating/sharing a common vision/direction and an understanding of the organization’s strategy. Deliver results in support of the company strategy and expectations; ensure operational excellence.
Directly impacts the organization through the establishment of credible engineered standards and quality programs that enhance the employee’s contribution, reduces operating costs, and improves customer service.
