We are currently seeking a Influenza Team Leader for the Silver Spring, Maryland area.
The Epidemiologist / Biostatistician will work in a team of Epidemiologists, Biostatisticians, and SAS Programmers to rapidly deploy an advanced pandemic influenza public health epidemiologic and serosurveillance capability for the Department of Defense, using the data resources of the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS) and the biospecimen resources of the Department of Defense Serum Repository (DoDSR).
Assists in the implementation of a system to enable improved public health serosurveillance for pandemic influenza using the DMSS and DoDSR serum specimens.
Assists in the development, planning, testing, and validation of detailed public health seroepidemiologic studies to be conducted in near-real time in the event of a suspected or confirmed outbreak of pandemic influenza, using the DMSS and DoDSR serum specimens.
Assists in the development, planning, testing, and validation of public health epidemiologic studies to facilitate the evaluation of the success or efficacy of empiric pharmaceutical or vaccine therapies deployed in response to pandemic influenza; and the development, planning, testing and validation of public health epidemiologic studies to assess risk factors related to relative susceptibility to or immunity from pandemic influenza, using the DMSS.
Assists in the development and execution of public health epidemiologic and seroepidemiologic studies in response to general operational requests, using the DMSS and DoDSR serum specimens.
Assists external military and collaborating civilian research clients in the development and execution of general epidemiologic and seroepidemiologic studies, using the DMSS and DoDSR serum specimens.
Assists fellow staff as needed regarding epidemiological study design, biostatistical methods, and SAS programming tasks.
Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
Performs light duties and other related duties as required and assigned.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Minimum Education/Training: Ph.D. or Masters Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or Statistics; or MPH or equivalent degree in a public health discipline.
Minimum Experience: 3-4 years of related experience in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or Statistics, with significant related experience using SAS.
Must have knowledge and ability to use and teach complex epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for assessing the risk of disease due to potential risk factors; familiarity with computer programming including detailed knowledge of statistical software including SAS, familiarity with Oracle database structures and queries using SQL; excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
