Information Systems Specialist I

This is technical work in operations and user support for the city ocomputer network, and telecommunications systems.

Work involves generating and printing a variety of weekly, bi weekly, monthly, and annual reports, billings, and checks and user support for personal computers throughout the City information processing systems. Work is performed under the direction of the Information Systems Manager and is reviewed through conferences and observations of results obtained.

Examples of Duties:

Monitors machine operation on production and conversion runs; sets console controls; analyzes machine halts and takes remedial action; maintains records and logs of machine operating data; operates peripheral equipment.

Analyzes, develops, modifies and revises operation procedures and developed programs to adapt to changes in user needs and prepares user instructions to be utilized in training and support. Prepares operation documentation according to standards.

Maintain backups of all systems, servers for quick retrieval of lost or corrupted files.

Participates in quality control procedures such as desk checking, testing and structured walk through.

Analyzes input and ouput data; confers with Information Services staff and users regarding the resolution of machine and program errors as quickly as possible.

Staffs the help desk on a rotating basis, and isolates user problems with computer and telecommunications hardware and software; contacts other Information Services staff or outside vendors for additional support.

Maintain shared resources such as printers and shared directories and also assists in operations when necessary.

Assits in training users on the most productive way to use applications, communicate with and assists user departments in with hardware/software problems, concerns and needs...

Use a variety of applications including electronic mail and other software products designed to manage the system.

Assist in the installation/setup of new computers, peripheral equipement and software.

Evaluate and troubleshoot reported problems, requests for file changes and new reports.

Provides effective and efficient customer services and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.

Typical Qualifications:

Graduation from high school (or GED) plus the equivalent of two years of college course work with the emphasis on data processing programming and analysis; and considerable programming/system analysis experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of computer system documentation; the use, application and operation of computer programs, hardware and software.

Ability to think logically, analyze, interpret problems and present the results with clarity and precision in non-technical language orally and in writing.

Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge in the computer technology field by participating in continuing education and training.

Ability to support users with a variety of hardware, software, or operational problems by phone and at their site as required.

Requires possession of any of the following certificates: Hewlett Packard Accredited System Engineer (ASE), Comptia A+, Comptia Network+, Comptia Systems+, or Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)

Possession of a valid Class D Illinois vehicle license or an equivalent license issued by the employee's state of residence.

Ability to act as on-call support.
