Duties and Responsibilities
Installs and configures Voice-over-IP, data, and wireless hardware, e.g.,routers, firewalls, workgroup switch, gateway or functional server, using established procedures.
Installs, configures and maintains network related systems that provide DNS and DHCP.
Troubleshoots and performs corrective measures to resolve or avoid problems with voice, data or wireless networks, typically within a campus or building environment.
Performs corrective action which may include replacement or reconfiguration of hardware, software, firmware or physical network connections; may also involve the coordination or collaboration w/other personnel, including contract resources.
Uses appropriate test equipment, such as UTP cable tester, network protocol analyzer, fiber optic cable test equipment, to diagnose and isolate network problems.
Monitors network perf with hardware and software tools such as Optiview Network Analyzer, IPFM, AirCheck Wi-Fi tester, OptiFiber OTDR, FiberInspector Mini, AirMagnets’ Spectrum XT, WiFi Analyzer PRO, Survey PRO/Planner and AirWave Network Mgmt System.
Assists senior staff in enforcing established security procedures to mitigate or isolate the impact of network intrusions, attacks or incidents from University resources.
Installs and terminates various types of standard, low-voltage communications cabling,including but not limited to, CAT5e UTP, CAT6 UTP, newer cabling, single and multi-mode fiber.
With guidance from or consultation w/senior staff, works with IT peers or customer personnel in other departments or campus operations, external vendors, service providers or institutions, to collect requirements, complete projects, or resolve problems.
Coordinates the notification of planned or unplanned outages working with both University and external organizations, such as Imiloa, NHERC, and the Hawaii Innovation Center.
With guidance from or consultation with senior staff, manages projects of limited scope, e.g., workgroup network implementation, to include the supervision or coordination of peers, other professional staff, and student technicians.
Coordinates project efforts or work tasks that may include integrating the work of other IT professional staff, student technicians, contractors and suppliers.
Provides advice to IT peers regarding elementary network design, monitoring, maintenance and implementation, consistent with the general principles followed on University campus networks.
Provides assistance with recommendations and procurement of new network-related equipment and upgrades including assistance with University procurement contracts.
Provide technical assistance with procurement of new equipment.
Updates technical skills by attending seminars, classes, and industry conferences.
Some night, weekend and holiday work is required.

Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and 3 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for Networking, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai'i broadband system; or equivalent education/training or experience.
Considerable working knowledge of networking as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodology.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with networking.
Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluate, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable knowledge of Aruba Networks Wireless System.
Considerable knowledge of Avaya Network Equipment.
Experience in configuring routers and using network monitoring software.
Considerable knowledge and experience with DNS and DHCP systems.
Considerable knowledge of a University environment.
Knowledge of unix-based operating system.
