Innovation Leader, Roofing & Asphalt Strategic Marketing

The Innovation Leader is responsible for developing and maintaining the health of the product pipeline, from insights through commercialization, of the business units they are assigned to support. The Innovation Leader, guided by the business strategy, will cull data into actionable insights, drive ideation, facilitate idea screening and concept development, leverage the management process to build initial business cases and ultimately drive effective decision making to move concepts from the pipeline into commercialization. The position reports to the Strategic Marketing Director with dotted line accountability to the business units they serve, including the General Manager, Product and Program Leaders and S&T Leads for the business unit.

  • Responsibilities :

  • a) Knowing the Customer

    Innovation Leaders are expected to understand current and future customers, their business models and key business needs as evidenced by both direct interaction and use of customer discovery tools. They are also expected to have strong knowledge of the external factors which can or could impact the business and that of our customer base including trends and market conditions. Strong knowledge of our customers’ customer is also key to the success of the role. Use of discovery, market research and direct interaction is foundational to the role. Understanding the influencers and participants in the entire value chain is also fundamental to the ability to effectively drive innovation.

  • Knowing the Business
  • Innovation Leaders need a strong working knowledge of the BMG and business unit strategy. Through ongoing alignment with leadership, Innovation Leaders assess work plans against the strategy to drive effective ideation and concept development to strengthen the product pipeline. Through knowledge of the business, Innovation Leaders are expected to develop initial business cases focused on customer inspired, market validated solutions that drive our investment strategies, priorities, and commercialization acceleration. Strong customer knowledge and insights will in turn feed the development and refinement of business strategy both long term and in operational execution.

  • Leading and Developing Talent
  • Innovation Leaders will demonstrate talent leadership through their ability to actively engage others, both internal and external to the corporation, in the innovation process. To assemble the right mix of talent, draw both unique and synergistic input and to capitalize on the opportunities the people bring to bear is both art and science that is key to the success of innovation.

  • Leading the Corporation with Innovation
  • In addition to pipeline development, Innovation Leaders are also expected to drive innovation competency into the BMG organization through formal training as well as exposure to the process, tools and approach. They are also responsible to develop, maintain and maximize the impact of key elements of the innovation strategy including legal (non-disclosure, intellectual property), communications, employee engagement, tools and measures.

  • Innovation Leaders also provide a key function within the company by serving as an internal link between and across every business unit, function and ultimately company assets. They are expected to make links in attributes of products to leverage within other product applications as well as tie knowledge from field to field, assess and engage talent in and outside of primary roles and “connect the dots” through their work to drive shareholder value across every measure. They access and apply lean principles, coupled with best practice sharing to improve engagement and performance as part of daily interactions in pursuit of pipeline enhancement.

    Job Requirements

    The role of innovation leader is one that requires a diverse and dynamic skill set, starting with the ability to actively accept and assimilate information quickly, apply economic thinking, maintain an openness and yet apply appropriate filters to information and assessments, full view to and respect for the many moving parts along the value chain and how best to leverage that understanding in application of their work, ability to actively engage people in many phases of pipeline development and strong business and marketing skills to drive good decision making.

    Education, Experience and Travel Requirements
    • Bachelor’s Degree required, MBA preferred, Marketing/Product Development or related field required
    • Minimum 5-7 years experience
    • Ability to travel 10-15%
    • Experience in business case development
    • Experience in leading and collaborating within a broad, cross-functional team
    • Strong financial/business acumen to develop business cases
    • Results and process driven with a passion for winning
    • Effective communication skills and excellent presentation / speaking abilities
    • Problem solving and decision making through analytics and data
