This is a full-time, 10-month permanent position. The Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 2 will divide its time between the Department of Design (DOD) and the Department of Art (DOA). The Sculpture Program operates in over 3,500 square feet of OSHA-compliant, industrially equipped wood, metal fabrication, foundry and general purpose studios.

This position is part of a Public School Employees of WWU bargaining unit. New employees are required to meet the membership requirements of the current collective bargaining agreement within 30 calendar days of employment.

About the Department: Art & Design

Position Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with and in response to the sculpture instructor’s and DOA Chair’s directions
  • Prepare materials and equipment for the sculpture studios and shops
  • Maintain a safe and effective studio work environment
  • Train student work-study monitors in basic studio/shop safety
  • Serve as the health and safety officer for the DOA
  • Coordinate with and assist the sculpture instructor with course assignments involving technical knowledge or expertise
  • Assist students in the preparation of course projects, especially those requiring technical expertise
  • Coordinate with the instructor and DOA in research and ordering of equipment
  • Maintain stock levels of supplies and materials in the sculpture studios
  • Oversee the maintenance and operation of Sculpture Studios
  • Coordinate departmental health and safety
  • Oversee building security
  • Weekly shopping, for the entire DOA and DOD
  • Setup and maintain other equipment in the DOA (i.e. easels & printmaking equipment) and DOD
  • Work with DOA and instructors in the preparation of equipment lists for Student Technology Fees Grants
  • Help with painting studio and shop needs
  • Coordinate departmental health and safety
  • Basic construction/assembly of furniture
  • Moving/lifting of equipment and furniture
  • Perform general service to the DOD pressroom, specifically to the guillotine paper cutter (e.g. Fluid, blades)
  • Be knowledgeable in basic first aid and the administration of CPR
  • Train Sculpture’s work-study studio monitors, in first aid and how to respond to injuries and other emergencies
  • Work with department chairs in the coordination and implementation of a building security program

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree, majoring in studio art
  • Two years of work experience with a broad range of materials, processes and safety particular to a contemporary sculpture studio environment, such as:
    • Bronze, aluminum, steel
    • Brazing, soldering, MIG, TIG and stick welding
    • All processes associated with bronze and aluminum casting
    • Mold making
    • Fabrication of wood, plastics and metal
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MFA in sculpture
  • Actual teaching or work experience in an academic program, in a college or university level sculpture program
  • Some experience in audio visual systems
