The INTO OSU - Intensive English Program is recruiting for full/part-time fixed-term Instructors for the 2012-2013 academic year. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.

The INTO OSU - Intensive English Program is recruiting for full/part-time fixed-term 12-month Instructors for the 2012-2013 academic year.

INTO OSU is a program of Oregon State University with a mission of preparing students for entrance into Oregon State University and as such, focuses on academic language preparation. The instructional mission encompasses five student populations: Academic English Program (IEP) students, Pathways students, General English students, Special Programs students and Conditionally Admitted students. Pathways students' progress in a cohort through a set curriculum of upper level language courses, bridge courses and credit bearing university courses over three or four terms with progressively fewer language courses and more entry-level credit courses.

This position will teach English and English for Academic Purposes to international students on a variety of programmes within INTO Centers. This includes Undergraduate and Graduate Pathway Programs.

Position Duties

45% Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to international students at the INTO OSU Center. This includes 'English for Academic Purposes' (EAP), General English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) all of which would entail teaching study skills and cultural awareness as appropriate. This includes teaching students who are currently undertaking degree studies, those preparing for future University study and other students on customized courses as required.

30% Make purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and meet the individual needs of students; Prepare, select, and use teaching-learning materials for international students (including the use of textbooks, in-house materials and self-created materials); Assess students and provide both formative and summative evaluations. Design tests and assessment tasks as required; Provide oral and written feedback to students and other stakeholders (e.g. program managers, academic schools, marketing staff, sponsors and parents); Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and ensure they are consistently applied; Provide academic support for international students as appropriate through consultations and tutorials (e.g. advice on language learning, guidance on study skills and academic expectations for University study, advice on where to seek additional academic support and information).

10% Carry out administrative and record-keeping tasks associated with teaching and assessment (e.g. student progress reports, test invigilation, marks sheets, attendance and activity records, tutorial logs, advising logs, and references).

15% Contribute to course and module development; provide teaching cover in the absence of other colleagues; participate in social activities where this is an integral part of the teaching-learning program; participate in and contribute to briefing sessions, student and teacher orientation and program functions; act as a positive ambassador for INTO; liaise with the Academic Support team to provide all required information in a timely manner. Participate in staff development and professional training as required; attend Center and section meetings as required.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

MA in TESOL, Linguistics, Education, Composition and other closely related fields.

Demonstrated excellence in ESL teaching with a record of at least two years of full-time experience.

Ability to work well as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

Advanced level English language skills typically demonstrated by the completion of a Bachelor's and Master's degree through the medium of English.

IT literate with ability to use all standard software to generate professional, well-presented documents and presentations including text and images.

Teaching experience in a university academic preparation program.

International teaching experience in addition to US experience.

Knowledge and experience of the languages and cultures represented in the INTO OSU Center student body.

Interest and expertise in Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) tools such as Starboards; online resources; computer classrooms; digital audio/video and iPads.

Administrative experience working with second language learners.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching experience in a university academic preparation program.

International teaching experience in addition to US experience.

Knowledge and experience of the languages and cultures represented in the INTO OSU Center student body.

Interest and expertise in Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) tools such as Starboards; online resources; computer classrooms; digital audio/video and iPads.

Administrative experience working with second language learners.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
