Title: Insurance Risk Manager

Location: Houston, Texas

Reports To: Director of Finance
Full Time, Exempt position

Position Overview :

This position is responsible for developing and implementing Rockwater’s insurance risk management program that supports the company’s strategic goals. The Insurance Risk Manager will be responsible for managing the company’s exposure to insurable risk and for ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to maintain the risk at acceptable levels.

Responsibilities :
  • Strategy Oversight - Develop and implement an insurance program strategy that supports Rockwater’s strategic objectives for risk tolerance. Develop and maintain broker and underwriter relationships that reflect Rockwater’s commitment to respect, integrity, safety and excellence.
  • Program Renewals – Manage the overall renewal process for all lines of insurance, which will include working with the broker on renewal strategies for the U.S. and Canada, gathering renewal data , completing renewal applications, travelling, when needed, to London and Canada to meet with underwriters in preparation for the renewal, assisting brokers with the negotiation process, assisting brokers with the presentation of the renewal options to senior management, obtaining authorization to bind coverage timely, ensuring that the premium schedule is reflective of the renewal costs in preparation for invoice payments, preparing invoices for timely payment, ensuring that allocations are provided for the various prepaid insurance premiums and working with broker to ensure that all new policies are received timely.
  • Property Program – Update total insured values, monitor minor incidents below the deductible, monitor claim progress regularly, working with Legal, Accounting , the field, the broker and the adjuster, ensure all required inspections are completed timely, manage any property projects such as the development of an internal methodology for determining updated replacement cost values on an annual basis.
  • Casualty Program – Ensure Workers’ Compensation (WC) postings are distributed timely, ensure Auto ID cards are printed and distributed timely, manage and work on WC , Auto Liability (AL)and General Liability (GL)claims, schedule and participate in quarterly WC and AL claim file reviews for current and legacy claims, participate in monthly GL litigated claim file review with General Counsel and other in-house counsel and broker, manage annual Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) calculations and work on any Casualty projects such as developing a process for dealing with catastrophic incidents or business continuity procedures.
  • Loss Control – Work with broker and operations personnel to schedule and participate in the Property and Casualty loss control inspections. Work closely with the Health, Safety and Environmental group to provide assistance where needed to help prevent or reduce the number and severity of accidents.
  • Financial Products – Work with broker to develop a D&O brochure for the senior management and board members. Participate directly in D&O claim resolution. Manage insurance-related Letters of Credit and Surety Bonds.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions – Participate directly in the M&A process for any possible merger or acquisition by attending team meetings, working closely with broker on the data gathering process and ensure that all of the insurance transition items are completed timely (certificates of insurance, auto ID cards, posting notices, cancellation of policies, premium invoice allocation, etc.).
  • Compliance and Audits – Assist broker and Payroll with coordinating the Workers’ Compensation audits, company-wide audits, and any other insurance-related audits or adjustments. Ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley.
  • Certificates of Insurance – Request certificates of insurance as required by contract. Ensure that the certificates are issued timely. Work to resolve any certificate issues with customers.
  • Contract Review – Assist Legal by reviewing contracts and agreements that contain insurance requirements. Ensure coordination with the contract indemnities and with the insurance program that Rockwater has. If needed, research special policies with broker.
  • Insurance Training – Develop insurance presentations to help other groups understand the insurance program provisions and reporting requirements, to help enhance claims management at the field level, to help others understand what risks insurance policies are designed to cover and to help the company understand the claim losses and how that impacts our Safety record and insurance premiums.
  • Administration – Develop department budgets. Prepare invoices for payment and provide the premium allocations. Monitor returns or additional premiums. Develop Insurance Risk Management processes and procedures. Assist other groups with developing company policies that have an insurance component.
  • Systems Administration – Ensure that insurance data is stored on a drive that is accessible to others in the Finance group. Serve as the administrator for access to RMIS systems provided by insurance carriers. Serve as the liaison with Axiom for nurse case management of Workers’ Compensation claims.


Skills/Experience :
  • Must have 10+ years progressively more responsible experience in insurance risk management including all lines of insurance and captive management.
  • Most desirable to have a bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business Management, Accounting, Finance or closely related major. MBA or JD considered a strong plus.
  • CRMA is highly preferred.
  • Must possess experience in claims handling in areas for Workers’ Compensation, D&O, Auto Liability, General Liability, Property and other similar insurance programs.
  • Substantial experience procuring and negotiating insurance products.
  • Extensive experience managing brokers, TPAs, and insurers.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of insurance contracts and language, underwriting procedures, premium and claims financing techniques, and claims adjustment procedures.
  • Exceptional financial and analytical skills including methods for allocating risk management costs and working with the Incurred by Not Reported (IBNR) reserves.
