Under general direction, provides independent support of Westar Energy’s compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and related support to assure area functions are adequately controlled, operating in an effective and efficient manner, and are in alignment with company goals. Independently assesses compliance with NERC Reliability requirements on an annual and as needed basis. Assesses areas of risk or noncompliance, evaluates internal controls (where applicable), develops potential solutions to keep risk within acceptable limits, and effectively communicates the risks and potential solutions to management and the Regulatory Compliance Department. Develops and administers the internal compliance database, providing database training to new NERC reliability owners, to ensure successful advocacy of a NERC compliance culture within appropriate company units. May also be responsible for performing testing related to the operating effectiveness of the company’s business process controls over financial reporting (Sarbanes-Oxley). Testing responsibilities include sampling, obtaining documentation, interviewing, preparing workpapers to support the testing performed, and concluding on test results.

The preferred candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in accounting or business related field. CIA, CPA or other related certification or auditing experience is preferred. MBA or other advanced degree may be beneficial. It is also preferred that the selected candidate have relevant work experience in the energy industry.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
Must have an understanding of fundamental internal control practices and be able to work effectively with others in a team environment. Must be able to build relationships and effectively use oral and written communication skills while dealing with personnel throughout all levels of the company. Must be able to analyze effectiveness and efficiency of operations, and formulate opinions and develop recommendations. Must be able to apply analytical thinking, creative problem solving, and sound reasoning. Must have the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities at the same time. Must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills including being organized, self-motivated, dependable, perceptive, decisive, objective, tactful, assertive, and persuasive. Familiarity with the NERC Reliability Standards, Sarbanes Oxley, and compliance in general, is highly desirable. Must have high ethical standards and the ability to remain independent. Must possess the ability to present a professional image to obtain the confidence, trust, and cooperation of the customer. Working knowledge of Windows, word processing, databases, and spreadsheets is preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
Valid driver's license required.
Normal office working conditions. Some travel to other locations may be required. Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
