Applications are due by December 31, 2012 Vera°s Center on Immigration and Justice (CIJ) works with government, nonprofit organizations, and communities to improve government systems that affect immigrants and their families. CIJ focuses on two objectives: increasing detained immigrants ’ access to legal information and counsel, and improving relationships between immigrant communities and law enforcement officials. The Center oversees two major federal programs that provide legal information to immigrant adults and children, develops and implements pilot programs, provides technical assistance, and conducts evaluation and empirical research. CIJ staff conduct original research and use evaluation methods to test new approaches to providing services for immigrant individuals and communities.

The Center is also developing a research focus on mental health issues related to immigration and criminal justice. Responsibilities: The winter-spring research intern will have the opportunity to work on two major projects within CIJ, including a study on identification of human trafficking victims and an evaluation of a legal orientation program for custodians of unaccompanied children. The range of tasks for these projects will include assistance with data collection, transcription of interviews, data entry and management, data analysis, literature reviews, and helping in report writing. Additional tasks may include assistance with outreach for dissemination of study results and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Vera seeks a candidate with the following qualities and skills: Strong organizational skills, communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team are essential. Familiarity with immigration, children and youth and mental health issues, mixed-methods research and evaluation experience and/or basic statistical knowledge is desirable. Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the social sciences, clinical disciplines, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Note: Prospective interns are encouraged to seek credit or independent funding through fellowship grants or internship programs if possible.
