The Vera Institute of Justice is an independent nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for safety and justice. Vera ’s Cost-Benefit Analysis Unit (CBAU) helps policymakers get clear and accessible information on the economic pros and cons associated with criminal and juvenile justice investments, so that they can identify the interventions that are both effective and affordable for their jurisdiction and allocate resources accordingly. CBAU performs cost-benefit analyses and other cost-related studies, provides assistance to jurisdictions conducting their own studies, and carries out research to advance the knowledge and application of cost-benefit analysis in the justice system. Responsibilities Working closely with CBAU and Vera staff, the intern will: Perform background research on cost-benefit analysis, justice reinvestment, and criminal justice policy; Assist in the preparation of written materials, including memoranda and policy briefs; Assist in the planning and development of web-based and written materials for the Cost-Benefit Knowledge Bank for Criminal Justice (cbkb.org); and Assist on other projects as assigned. Qualifications Vera seeks a candidate with the following: Bachelor ’s degree and currently enrolled in a graduate program for criminal justice, public administration, law, or a closely related discipline. Experience in a policy-related position and prior experience with issues related to economic analysis and/or the criminal justice system. Demonstrated ability to gather, synthesize, analyze, and communicate information for a variety of audiences; Demonstrated knowledge of criminal justice issues; Strong interpersonal skills and verbal and written communications skills; and Interest in social justice and commitment to fairness.
