The Vera Institute of Justice combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit center for justice policy and practice, with offices in New York City, Washington, DC, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. Our projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world. Vera ’s Los Angeles Office Vera ’s growing Los Angeles office seeks a graduate student in planning or public policy to assist with project development and strategic planning. Responsibilities The intern will work closely with Vera ’s Los Angeles staff to develop project ideas. Activities may include: conducting policy research on local criminal justice issues, drafting concept papers including a landscape analysis and background research on relevant issues, attending local government and community stakeholder meetings, and assisting staff members with existing projects in the areas of sentencing and corrections, immigration and cost-benefit analysis. The intern may also: prepare written memoranda to be used in engagements with government clients, prepare presentations that will be made to senior policymakers, perform administrative tasks, and develop surveys to collect data on criminal justice trends and practices.

There may be opportunities to attend client meetings, observe staff as they work with clients in various capacities, and participate in strategy meetings. Qualifications Vera seeks a candidate with the following skills and qualities: A bachelor ’s degree in political science, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, or public policy, and enrolled in a graduate program. A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of research related to criminal justice issues. The ability to work with others effectively and efficiently.

The ability to make easy-to-read graphs and tables. The capacity to analyze and interpret simple descriptive statistical data. Demonstrated experience and skill in conducting social science and legal research. Strong research and writing skills.
