The Vera Institute of Justice runs an annual summer internship program for undergraduate, graduate, and law school students. Interns typically work full time in one of Vera ’s departments or centers and programs; some part-time positions may be available. In addition to working on individual assignments, all interns participate in events organized by the internship coordinator. For example, last summer interns visited Rikers Correctional Facility, lunched with executive-level management, and visited Vera demonstration projects.

Common Justice Undergraduate or Graduate Intern

Common Justice is the newest demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice. The project is a restorative justice-based alternative to incarceration and victim service program for serious and/or violent felony cases such as assault, burglary, and robbery. The project brings 16 to 24-year olds responsible for crimes together with those they have harmed and their support people in a facilitated dialogue to determine appropriate sanctions to take the place of a prison sentence. The project engages and prepares all parties, convenes the dialogues, and provides supervision and support to both those harmed and those responsible for crime. It aims to meet the needs of people harmed by crime, prevent further violence, minimize the unnecessary use of incarceration, and improve people ’s experience of justice. The project seeks an intern to work closely with its staff and director during the summer of 2013.

Responsibilities: The Intern may be responsible for the following duties:
  • Be present in Supreme Court to identify suitable cases for the project;
  • Screen cases based on program admission criteria;
  • Develop employment and program opportunities for participants —both victims and defendants;
  • Support staff in building and expanding external partnerships;
  • Conduct research, as necessary; and
  • Work on additional short-term projects.
Qualifications: Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
  • Experience with criminal justice field;
  • Strong interest in social justice for underserved populations;
  • Strong interest in criminal defense preferred;
  • Ability to work with a diverse population;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required;
  • Creativity, flexibility, patience, and follow-through;
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to work alone and in a team environment; and
  • Bilingual English/Spanish desirable.
