The primary purpose of this position is to interpret (receptive and expressive sign language) for school meetings which include school personnel, students, parents, and/or other external participants to ensure access to information are understood. Meetings may include but are not limited to IEP meetings, student staffing, Mental Health meetings, staff development meetings on and off campus with DPI and other outside persons/agencies, phone conversations, etc. This position will provide services to Deaf Administrators, and Dept. Heads as needed on a daily basis. This position will interpret in the classroom for mainstreamed students and share teaching responsibilities of Sign Language Orientation Classes to new employees who do not have knowledge of sign language. Maintain Interpreter Database electronically.

This is a 10-month 30 hour per week position that works flexible hours Monday - Friday but mostly 8:00 am – 3:00 pm at Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf located in Wilson, NC. The hiring salary range is $25,757 - $39,831. This position will require occasional travel and is subject to a criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

An ideal candidate will have considerable skills in receptive and expressive interpreting, language mediation and possession of long and short-term memory skills, and skilled in operation of all office equipment, computer, TDDs, Video Relay and Relay Services. An ideal candidate will have knowledge and follow the ethics of interpreting. The candidate should have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and general public. The candidate must adhere to Interpreters Code of Ethics, school policies and confidentiality is very important.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from high school and one year of interpreting experience in a variety of situations which results possession of NC Interpreter and Transliterator License, Level B by the NC Interpreter Classification System; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must keep certification current and meet CEU requirements.
Must have valid NC Driver’s License and maintain a safe driving record.
