WFTS-TV, an E.W. Scripps owned ABC affliate in sunny Tampa (DMA 14) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Investigative Journalist. Successful candidate will be an award winning, resourceful and passionate about news.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED This list of duties is not exhaustive, and duties may be added, deleted or changed at any time, without notice. 1. Gather, write and present investigative news reports for various newscasts on-air and online. 2. Generate, research and prepare investigative reports on an on-going basis. 3. Gather and write stories specifically for the WFTS web site(s). 3. Report live on location from various news events. 4. Continually develop investigative news stories by being connected to local community leaders and authorities. 5. Perform other duties as needed, and as directed by the Special Projects Executive Producer and News Director. REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or related discipline. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years professional reporting experience, 3 of which must include investigative reporting in a medium or large Television News market. EQUIPMENT: Newsroom computer experience mandatory along with above average skills using Microsoft Office Suite. LICENSE/ CERTIFICATE: Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and provide proof of insurance. SKILLS/ ABILITIES: Candidate would have superb writing skills, aggressive reporting skills, and an impeccable record of working along commonly held journalistic ethics and knowledge of current media law required. The ideal candidate would be familiar with Florida law, Sunshine laws, and the Freedom of Information Act as they pertain to investigative reporting. Strong news judgment and organizational skills must be proven and demonstrated in previous employment. Examples would show that the candidate continually tells excellent stories that connect with the viewer, is a creative storyteller able to breakdown complicated information and details into easily understood stories, and be able to work multiple complex stories at the same time juggling each through to completion for broadcast. Source development and constant story idea generation are a must. Should have a proven track record of digging and uncovering big stories that make a difference. Candidate should have recent experience in producing content for the internet. Exemplary communication skills to effectively interact with co-workers and the public. Candidate must have the ability to work extended hours, meet deadlines and have a flexible schedule that includes mornings, evenings and/or weekends. Must be willing and able to travel.
