Conduct complex investigations of all types into the fraud, waste and abuse of public funds. Investigations involve reviewing documents of all types and often require proficiency in conducting audits and analysis of financial records and financial reports. Responsibilities include: interviewing witnesses and other parties, completing interview and investigative reports, investigating and documenting citizen complaints (including hotline calls), collecting and securing evidence, drafting findings, and, on occasion, assisting prosecutors in case and trial preparation, including testifying in grand jury and court proceedings.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree, Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or other professional designations desirable.

Minimum of three years of investigative or audit-related work experience required.

Familiarity with financial documents and proven ability to analyze and audit financial records strongly preferred. Working knowledge of investigative procedures, good organizational and analytical skills, strong interpersonal and communication skills, interviewing skills, computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets and database), strong investigative computer research skills, and excellent writing and verbal communications skills necessary. Must be able to multi-task and have exemplary time management skills to handle several objectives concurrently.
Comments: The Office of the Inspector General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Office) is the oldest state-level inspector general’s office in the nation. The Office has a broad mandate to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse in the expenditure of public funds. The Office has the authority to subpoena records and people for investigations and management reviews, and to investigate both criminal and civil violations of law.
