GATX is a leader in leasing transportation assets and controls one of the largest railcar fleets in the world. We have openings for an entry level and an experienced investment analyst at our downtown Chicago corporate headquarters. These are high profile positions performing a critical function in GATX’s ongoing investment program.
Provide economic analysis and analytical support for evaluating business opportunities and investment decisions including asset acquisitions, asset dispositions, transaction structuring and related decisions. Along with the experience to deal with complex assignments, including portfolio acquisitions and innovative structures, candidates for a senior position will distinguish themselves by having an advanced understanding of financial theory as well as a good understanding of tax and accounting concepts as they relate to both investment analysis and transaction structuring. Successful candidates for both positions will have outstanding quantitative and modeling skills.
o Perform economic analyses of proposed domestic and international investments including: single investor lease structures, lease syndications, portfolio acquisitions, asset restructuring and business acquisitions. Analyses are performed by utilizing existing models, including commercially available lease pricing software, or by developing unique spreadsheet models.
o Participate within a deal team to structure proposed transactions and participate in the closing process. Experienced analysts may conduct accounting and tax research related to both structuring domestic and international transactions.
o Support ongoing fleet / portfolio management and financing activities.
o Analysts must be able to work concurrently on multiple projects with a minimal amount of supervision, solve problems, and produce accurate work through self-checks.
o Will interact with all levels of management, as well as deal advocates, portfolio and fleet management staff and internal specialists (e.g. accounting and tax) and must be able to communicate assumptions, results, issues and solutions in a clear and concise manner to all levels of the organization.
o Experienced analysts may participate in training and coaching junior analysts, reviewing the work of other analysts and may have supervisory responsibilities.
Education and Experience Requirements:
o Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Transportation, Mathematics, Economics, Finance or Statistics required.
o MBA with an emphasis in quantitative analysis techniques, or MBA in process, strongly preferred.
o 2 to 10 years of financial analysis experience in investment analysis, capital investment, lease pricing, business valuation or similar activities with an emphasis on cash flow modeling.
o Experience in design, development, testing and implementation of applications with Visual Basic or equivalent experience with other general purpose programming languages is highly desirable.
o Demonstrated understanding, commensurate with experience, of financial concepts, capital market theory, relevant tax and accounting principles.
o Exposure to statistical analysis, probability theory and simulation techniques.
o Advanced level Excel skills and general level skills of Word and PowerPoint.
o Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to collaborate effectively with others.
o Experience with database management systems a plus.
