DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Books prisoners into jail, inventory property, input, maintain, and record confidential information on prisoners and prisoners' activity, searches prisoners for weapons and contraband, conducts identification procedures for fingerprinting and photographing prisoners. Releases individuals upon receiving official discharge notices.
Requires the ability to exercise physical control and dominion of incarcerated individuals. Manual dexterity is essential for the performance of activities including, but not limited to, handcuffing, searching, and escort of incarcerated individuals to court, jail holding, and housing units. In addition, this position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items up to 40 pounds and/or long hours of standing or walking during the performance of duties.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED certification. Must attend and successfully pass Jail Attendant School coordinated by the Jail Division, affiliated with the Houston Police Academy.
Certification: Must obtain a certificate signed by a physician that states a tuberculosis infection test was conducted, and the results of the test indicated negative for tuberculosis. If the results of the test indicated positive for tuberculosis, must obtain a certificate signed by the attending physician that states the tuberculosis in noninfectious, and the physician must provide correspondence that treatment for tuberculosis is being provided (Required by the State of Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 89).
May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's license.

No experience is required.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
It is preferred that applicants have a valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License, and must be in compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. (AP 2-2)
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED
To be considered for this position, all qualified applicants must first pass a reading comprehension/vocabulary test given at the time of the interview.
