Network Engineer (Job Number: 319856)
The Homeland & Civilian Business Unit has a current opening for a Network Engineer to work at Ames Research Center in San Jose, California supporting the Communications Emerging Technology Task.
The NICS contractor is responsible for the identification, evaluation, and eventually implementation of data communications innovations and emerging networking technologies into the operational environment. This position is at the Ames Research Center, under the NICS Strategy Generation (SG) Performance Work Structure (PWS), and will support the Communications Emerging Technologies (CET) laboratory activities inclusive. In addition, the position will require NASA Agency wide support to related Agency networking activities.
Perform a variety of complex network research & engineering tasks independently that are broad in nature and are concerned with the design and implementation of emerging technologies, integrated networks, including hardware, software, and support facilities and/or equipment. Participate in technical/engineering network activities of higher complexity and importance than those normally assigned to lower level engineers. Plan and perform network-engineering research, design development, prototyping, and other assignments in conformance with network design, engineering and customer specifications. Engage with customers, Agency management and vendors to assist in enabling use of new technologies for solutions to needs of customers.
Candidate must be capable of providing overall network engineering support for a broad range of programs. Support the full system engineering life-cycle, including requirements analysis, design, development, integration, test, and implementation. Candidate has comprehensive knowledge of computing systems, applications, and data communications. Candidate has the ability to complete difficult, complex, and sometimes partially specified assignments. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and establishes goals to meet objectives.
Candidate must be capable of configuring computer systems and software, high-end routers, switches and other network devices used to support the CET and its mission to evaluate early and emerging networking technologies. Examples of this may include topics such as Software Defined Networking, networking services in Virtual Machine environments, end-to-end high performance capabilities, new methods for providing authentication and scalable security systems.
Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Regularly interacts with senior management on matters concerning several functional areas, and/or customers. Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations.
Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Determines and pursues courses of action essential in obtaining desired outcomes. Act independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may supervise or provide guidance to other personnel. Adept at accommodating and embracing changing requirements that can arise during ongoing projects. Writes periodic status reports and comprehensive reports when projects are completed.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a related field and 5+ years experience in a broad range of assignments in technical tasks directly related to the proposed area of responsibility; some experience can be concurrent with education. Multi-disciplinary scientific education outside networking and communications is a plus, particularly in one or more of aeronautics, space, and earth sciences.
Candidate should have experience configuring and installing routers, switches, and related networking equipment (Cisco IOS and Juniper JunOS experience a plus). Candidate should also have the ability to configure and connect copper and fiber optic interfaces and have experience installing, configuring, and maintaining modern operating systems (Linux, Windows 7, MacOS X). Being fluent in one or more programming languages and comfortable with scripting is also required.
Must have a clear understanding of network stack (OSI reference model), with experience using and configuring TCP/IP, UDP/IP, DNS, DHCP. Familiarity with monitoring methods, security, and testing tools: SNMP, Netflow, Nagios, SNORT, BRO, IDS, PerfSONAR. Experience or training in routing protocols: OSPF, BGP. Familiarity with authentication tools and mechanisms: RADIUS, 802.1X, two-factor authentication, PKI/certificates. Experience configuring and managing firewalls desirable. Experience or familiarity with VMware/ESX, Vyatta, VOIP, Unified Communications, wireless communications, and video conferencing applications desirable is also required.
