? The Database Administrator (DBA) implements and maintains the database environment. Primary function is to monitor and maintain a production
? Teradata database environment, including runtime optimization, capacity management and planning, security, configuration, scheduling, and execution of maintenance utilities. Major Teradata tools include Teradata Administrator (WinDDI), Teradata Manager, Teradata Query Manager, and Teradata Priority Scheduler.
? Maintains user tables and permissions. The DBA trains Client DBAs on administering Client-specific solutions.
? The DBA is also responsible for database backup and recovery and restart as well as data and referential integrity of the database. While this is typically a Teradata or contract employee at the beginning of an engagement, an employee from the Client Company may take on this responsibility.
? The DBA will sometimes take on the responsibilities of system administration. They are responsible for monitoring, managing, and tuning the underlying hardware and operating system in a production Teradata database environment. While system administration typically the responsibility of an employee from the Client Company, in new installations it could be a Teradata or contract employee. The system administration responsibilities are, therefore, included in the Database Administrator responsibilities.
Responsibilities include:
o Physical database design and tuning.
o Bulk loading of source data and source data conditioning.
o Database security and diagnostic maintenance.
o Logical-to-physical data model engineering.
o Configuration management of application software to database structure.
o Capacity planning of database.
o Distributed database management and control.
o Database user security and permissions.
o Evaluation and utilization of software products to assist in the management of data.
o Planning, installation, and maintenance of DBMS software.
o Primary interface to DBMS vendor.
o Diagnosis of problems and resolution for application software.
o Measurement of DBMS performance and tuning; diagnosis of problems.
o Modification of system-level configuration to optimize performance.
o Interface with SQL developers for performance and data access requirements.
o Development of standards and procedures for the DBMS environment.
o Consultation with system administrator regarding O/S - DBMS requirements.
o Maintenance of physical integrity of all production databases.
o Regularly scheduled verification procedures and error correction.
o Monitoring errors
o Administrate server platform and operating system
o Participate in the design of hardware and software management processes, including vendor management processes
o Implement and administer user access, security, charge back, backup and recovery processes, job scheduling, and software administration standards.
o Participate in the design of hardware and software management processes, including vendor management processes.
o Control change management process of hardware, software, and network of administered systems.
o Monitor hardware and software errors and system restarts.
