CITY OF OMAHA CLASS SPECIFICATION No. 6910 LANDSCAPE GARDENER NATURE OF WORK This is skilled work in caring for nursery stock of woody ornamentals, shrubs, or flowers and performing landscape gardening in the City nursery, greenhouse, holding nurseries, parks and other specific areas. Work also includes the care and maintenance of golf greens, fairways and roughs. Routine work assignments are performed independently; however, work is inspected during progress and upon completion by the assigned supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Any one position may not perform all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties which may be performed in positions allocated to this classification.) Performs general maintenance to equipment pertaining to forestry, golf and floriculture landscape gardening such as oiling, cleaning, lubricating, replacing gear hosing and gears, and replacing mower blades. Maintains equipment service maintenance records. Trains and provides work direction to other employees. Removes snow from streets using snow plows. Performs related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification. The following essential functions are specific to the designated division: Park Maintenance and Forestry Fertilizes, waters, prunes, transplants, removes and propagates flowers, young trees, shrubs and other vegetation. Designs flower beds for parks and boulevards. Diagnoses plant problems and applies pesticides and fertilizers to promote plant health. Mows grass in the parks and boulevards. Applies pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to trees and shrubs. Golf Mows, waters, aerifies, sprays, fertilizes and repairs damage to golf greens, tees, collars, fairways and roughs. Changes the placement of the cups and tees on the golf courses. Maintains sand traps, reseeds and resods areas. Diagnoses turf problems and applies pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to turf. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of propagating, planting, fertilizing, cultivating, pruning and general care of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. Knowledge of the specialized care and maintenance of golf greens and fairways. Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and practices used in landscape gardening. Knowledge of the use of fungicides, herbicides and insecticides and other disease management techniques used in landscape gardening. Skill in the use of tools of the trade pertaining to forestry, golf and floriculture landscape gardening. Ability to design flower beds. Ability to set out plants and flowers according to specified designs and ornamental flower projects. Ability to identify a wide variety of flowers, trees and shrubs. Ability to recognize and treat various diseases, insect and abiotic problems of flowers, trees, shrubs and turf. Ability to understand oral or written instructions. Ability to operate automotive equipment and tools of the trade pertaining to forestry, golf and floriculture landscape gardening. Ability to reach, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push, pull and otherwise perform the movements involved in exercising the essential functions of this position for periods of up to eight or more hours. Ability to move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds up to 33% of the time; weighing up to twenty (20) pounds 34 to 66% of the time; and weighing up to ten (10) pounds from 67 to 100% of the time. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (The knowledge, skills and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.) Park Maintenance and Forestry Two years of experience in working with woody plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers Golf Two years of experience in golf course maintenance, including the diagnosis, cure and prevention of diseases, especially of golf course greens. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Must possess a valid class "B" commercial driver's license with "N" endorsement and air brake certification by the end of the probationary period. Must possess a current category 04 Certified Federal and State of Nebraska Pesticide Applicator's Certificate. Must possess a 3rd grade hoisting and engineer's certificate by the end of the probationary period. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is primarily performed outside in temperatures ranging from below 0 degrees to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for periods of more than one hour and may involve exposure to chemicals, humidity, fumes, odors and dusts. Work is performed near or with vibrating machinery and moving mechanical parts. Noise levels may require shouting in order to be heard. Work also entails contact with the general public and may involve receiving complaints from patrons.
