To provide related community services, carry out special assignments, and patrol an assigned area. Works an assigned shift and performs various law enforcement duties including the protection of persons and property, the prevention and investigation of crimes; the apprehension of law violators; resolves community problems; maintains community safety and security; controls traffic flow and enforces State and local traffic regulations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general direction from a Police Sergeant or an assigned Supervisor.

Experience & Training and License/Certificate:
Experience Must have successfully completed probationary period and Training Program at another law enforcement agency; and must possess current POST Basic certificate. Training Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. College level coursework or other specialized training in police science, psychology, public administration or related field is highly desirable. License & Certificates Possession of a valid California driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Age Minimum age at time of appointment is 20.5 years. Citizenship All employment offers are contingent upon establishing proof of individual's right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act. Medical Shall meet and maintain the City of Newport Beach Pre-Employment Medical Standards within the discretion of the Medical Examiner for the City. Criminal Background Record must be free from conviction of any felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or domestic violence, and from an excessive number of citations for traffic violations. Background history should indicate responsibility, dependability, honesty, integrity, acceptable communication skills, good judgment and the ability to relate well to others.

Human Resources Recruitment Center Candidates with a minimum score of 70% will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to begin the background process as positions become available. Final selection will be made by the Police Chief according to Civil Service Rules & Regulations. Prior to any offer of employment, a thorough background investigation will be conducted.
SELECTION PROCEDURE: At the conclusion of the testing process, the top scoring candidates will be placed on an eligible list. Candidates may be invited to begin the background process after the list is certified. Appointments will be made in accordance with Civil Service rules. All candidates will undergo an extensive background process including polygraph, criminal history, credit history, driving record, military history, civil records check, past and current employers, drug and alcohol abuse, education, and reference contacts. Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation may be selected for a position and receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon psychological and medical examinations by City selected medical professionals.
